Basenjis for sale

  • I am wondering who is posting this ad since Mystical Basenjis is Dolores Harmon, who does not "do" email. Nor is she located in OK.
Her litter was b/w and r/w with a fanconi-clear sire and she lives in WV:

This would have to be someone else…. using Dolores' kennel name.
    Shame on you.

  • I'm not sure. I think it's a BYB also, if you do a google search it's hard to find, but she lists the pups on myspace, dogster, and OKC superads.

  • It would sure be good to get full info on this so called litter for sale.

  • She has a myspace page, and according to that is only 22 yrs old.

I believe that Lisa Lynn, who has a B named Bella on this forum, may be her friend on myspace. Maybe she has more info.?
The myspace for this breeder is Basenji Puppies and the web addy is : http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=439250173

  • I just sent a message on myspace asking if tests were done for Fanconi, and/or hips, patella, thyroid.

  • Do let us know what you hear, if anything.

  • It is in pretty poor form to be using another breeder's kennel name. :(

  • I am NOT defending this person… however... I would doubt that she has any idea what a responsible breeder is or that there might be someone with the same "kennel" name for their Basenjis. Or that people don't use the same names....

  • @YodelDogs:

It is in pretty poor form to be using another breeder's kennel name. :(

My guess is that she isn't aware that she IS using another breeder's name.
Probably just sounded like a cool name.

  • but if these puppies are AKC registered, doesn't she have to register her kennel name? or do they allow you to use any kennel name? this just sounds fishy…

  • @Knipper:

but if these puppies are AKC registered, doesn't she have to register her kennel name? or do they allow you to use any kennel name? this just sounds fishy…

Unless you pay to register the "kennel" name.. it is fair game… it is not required to register a kennel name... it is personal choice

  • Actually, it isn't even as simple as wanting to register your kennel name with AKC. I would like to be able to do that, but I do not breed enough litters to qualify for a registered kennel name. You must breed 5 litters in 5 years to qualify.

  • wow, that seems like a lot, especially considering what goes into a good litter.

  • Yes, especially when you only breed a litter because you plan to keep a puppy and all your dogs are housedogs.

  • @JazzysMom:

My guess is that she isn't aware that she IS using another breeder's name.

Maybe not but I hope she reads this and refrains from using it from this point on.

  • Yes, she recently sent me a friend request which I accepted. I suspected BYB also, I asked her a question about how long she had been breeding Basenjis. I was trying to get a response and dig a little deeper, but she never responded to my question… which made me even more suspicious. I left her as my friend for future reference, interesting she popped up here!

  • BTW, the only Basenji breeder I knew of in WV (until now) is in Proctor, WV… Bethany of Rosewood Kennels. Oh, and a girl named Melisa in Proctor... I'm not sure if she and Rosewood are in some way connected, but Melisa claims to breed and show Basenjis...

  • Dolores has been around awhile.
Karen Hutchinson has co-bred with her.
Dolores got a puppy from Lisa A [Itzyu] last year.
He is a littermate to my Bebe [also from Lisa].

Unfortunately, this girl probably got her dogs from the PM in Keota, OK and most likely they aren't even AKC registered…

My guess is you're thinking of Melisa Skillman? (Her last name might be different now.) If so, then yes she is also a breeder/exhibitor, Dija Basenjis. Her dogs have a similar pedigree as Beth's dogs and they do work together sometimes. I don't know all the details but I do know they associate with each other, more now than in the past. Melisa used to live in Ohio and I've seen her around quite a bit. Been a while though since we've talked.

I think that's the Melisa I am speaking of, I'm glad you metioned the name of her Co. (Dija Basenjis). It sounds very familiar, I had just never put the two together in my head… There aren't many Basenji Breeders in my state!

Breeding once a year actually is not a problem health wise. Breeding to produce pets for income… not so much.

Folks, This thread has been closed, pending review and moderation. Please respect our forum community rules and guidelines. If you feel that you need stop posting for a while because of a conflict with other members, please step back and email us directly before posting publicly about the issue. Best way to to handle arguments on the public forum is to just let go and move on. http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?t=374 COURTESY AND RESPECT The purpose of this board is to provide a place for Basenji owners to make connections, exchange information and assist and encourage one another. It is above all a friendly environment for online discussion. Don't be rude to others, or make an argument personal If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all Know the difference between a difference of opinion and a personal attack Don't try to "win" an argument by repeating yourself over and over Don't tell others what to post Don't bash other members Keep it clean, don't use profanity Why can't I tell this user what an idiot he/she is; every single thing he/she posts is just so wrong? If you can't find a respectful way to express your difference of opinion, then you're better off saying nothing at all. Don't talk down to other posters, lecture them or be rude and dismissive. Disagreement is fine, but attacking another poster personally will get you in trouble and result in a ban from the forum. But he started the fight by attacking me! Can't I defend myself? This is a forum for the discussion of Basenjis, not a dueling society. If you feel attacked, please report it to the admin and then ignore the poster, respond to another thread. Remember, however much you were provoked, if you attack a poster personally then you are just as guilty of breaking the rules. Why can't I tell a poster that he's breaking the rules? This board has a moderator. Telling other people what to do is rude, derails the conversation even further and often ignites flame wars. Please just report the user to the admin and move on.

I just wanted to respond to this thread. I hope everything is going good with you and things are working out. The thing I wanted to respond to was the thought that a man may have abused him since he does not do well with men. A basenji can make their mind up about disliking something for no reason at all. My first Basenji was with me from 6 weeks of age and never had a man abuse him and at two years old decided he hated men for the next two years. I kept him socialized and kept getting men to feed him pet him while I had him stacked and holding his head, had them talk to him, go over hime etc. after a while his dislike left as quickily as it came. I have had a few dogs do this sort of stuff between 12 and 18 months I call it the stupid stage, they all the sudden don't like men, women, the grooming table, the trash can outside etc. It is important to work them through their fear so they can be a complete dog. Just think how it would be for you if say you were scared of men but had to see them daily just think how stressful your life would be. I hope if you keep him you help him get through this or if you place him please be honest with the new owners and recommend that they get him out and work him through this.

@sharronhurlbut: Pat, I am not a "fan" of low cost spay/neuter places either…BUT IMO, they are less of a risk than having an intact basenji placed in the general public. I will post an article I just received re pet owners and getting their pets fixed in my next post. Re this note, to me, having the dog fixed at one of these places is the lesser of 2 evils. Yeah…what she said!

Our B went to a family in another state. They have had Bs in the past and really wanted another one. The only home that may not have understood B behavior was the first one with the elderly couple. The family we got him from wanted to keep him but had a child who was allergic. Our daughter wanted to keep him also but could not have a dog where she is living. We have 6 other dogs, and felt we could not give him the attention he deserves. We would have liked to keep him, but believe he will have a better home where he now is. Thank you for your concern. Marilyn
