Trying to run towards speeding cars! New Scary behavior!

    I take kiro for walks everyday…. in the neighborhood with normal traffic. shes 2. I use a leash that can go out about 15ft, but i keep her pretty close unless were in a field.(like a normal lead)
    she recently started running towards speeding cars! as the headlights approach or the car gets close she will stop what shes doing and pull towards the road!!!! Its terrifiying!!!!:confused:
    I read that basenjis do this but she never did this before!!! :eek: I get so scared and wonder why shes started this all the sudden! Yesterday i tried watching for cars and i would tell her 'STAY, STAY, stay" untill the car passed.... which is like every other 15 seconds. any other suggestions?

    oh man this is really scary, dont take this the wrong way, but it reminded me of having a special child...who is trying to dart into traffic! im not used to her doing things like this and its so scary! and its so sudden! why?
    it made me feel so sad... and like a backwards step.... i think thats shes so smart and now i just feel like i havent taught her enough. :(

    Chance started doing the same recently. I stop, get his attention and tell him no. So far it's getting better, but he is still launching himself towards the cars. I also try not to walk near busy roads of course.

    thank you.. ill keep posted…. i just got so worried.... i started to wonder if its from being in the car alot. maybe since inside the car we go towards cars and shes safe if that makes her feel that way or maybe im ot letting her run enough?

    My B does this as well. I actually have to avoid busy streets now because I just don't trust him. I continually work on it with him but he has a major fasination for chasing cars too! I think it may be a sight hound thing because my friends Italian Greyhounds do it to and my B has a very high prey drive.

    Tosca does the same thing. She doesn't really do it with cars, but anything a truck size or bigger, she lunges towards it with as much power as she can. I really gotta be careful to hold on tight to the leash when I see them coming! It scares me also, because I worry that if she ever got out and loose, she'd be hit in no time.

    That is interesting, in all the years I have had Basenjis, mine have never done that….

    My boy does that.
    I think he is trying to stop the car or slow it down.
    I work with him, to sit and give him treats when I see a car approching.
    But it is scary when they charge out toward a speeding car.

    None of mine have ever done this. On the other hand they have all completely ignored cars - which is just as bad (because drivers aren't always paying attention to anything below their dashline).

A dog off leash traveling, especially to other countries, mountains etc is a recipe for disaster. If something spooked the dog, or it went into hunt mode, how will you get it back? Where are the resources (people, family, rescues) to help put out food, traps, whatever? How long can you extend your stay. Even with a leash, you risk a fall or something, but at least you have more control. But why not take a relatives child or children? Or find a hiking companion?

    This is an interesting thread. Any afghan owners notice this in their dogs as well? When Beo was younger, back when I was using the crate with him, when he would have a 'poop' accident he would take a blanket and use his nose to encircle said accident, didn't do the same thing with pee accidents….I don't know if it's the same thing or not, honestly I think he just wanted it as far away from him as possible. He still does this mounding behavior with like bones and the like; he'll use his nose and push a blanket or something on top of it, and then further us his nose to bunch it up into a relatively good looking circle shape. He won't have anything to do with dog feces now though ....he prefers to go in the bushiest/covered area he can find, and then wants absolutely nothing to do with it afterwards (I have to literally drag him through public areas where there's a lot of dog poop lying around).... It is kind of funny to see his "wide-eyed, EW! ICK!" reaction when he accidentally steps in some. Seems like it's more common for basenjis to half halfheartedly attempt to bury it, as opposed to take the time to cover it up with their noses?

    @davcoz: there are some people that he just does not like. These people tend to be the type that make my wife and I uneasy. Any ideas about this? **If these folks make you and your wife uneasy. Then why wouldn't you expect the same reaction from your B? He's lettin everybody know what he's feelin and your not sayin! :rolleyes:**

    Since Sonny joined the family three years ago its seems everyone has invested in a pub style table! my house, my parents & my brother. he can't reach so he doesn't even try. sometimes its just easier to out smart them! :D The two things that just overwhelm sonny are cheese and steak…he'll do anything to try and get it and I swear he blocks me out and is lost in a trance! ;)

    My previous boy loved to chase cars also but I lived in an apartment complex with lots of "green" space where we could walk without being near the well traveled areas. There was also a 98 acre (I think that's the right amount) wooded area right next to the complex that was great fun (when it wasn't muddy). Very glad I don't live there anymore as those 98 acres are now a mall!! And the balcony that we had would have looked right to it. Can't even imagine all the basenji craziness from all the activity if we still lived there. Current boy really doesn't care too much about cars (thank-you previous owners, whomever you are) but he has still run a path in the back yard from running from side to side trying to watch the joggers/bike riders/even just walkers coming down the street…and they don't even need to have a dog with them, although its worse if they do. But he also chases all the squirrels that come to my hickory tree, the bunnies that (I think) live under one of my pines, the neighbor dog, etc.,etc. I'm not sure it can be completely stopped, its their nature, but it can be curtailed. Some good advise here. Good Luck!

    Hello, I just wanted to send a quick update on Nulla. She is doing so well! We started a dog training course where my boyfriend and I are the alpha dogs. There is not treats involved and it has shown amazing results. Nulla has been in the course for about a month now. We have had no eating problems from her (no barfing, no not eating what we set our for her), no behavioral problems (no chewing my shoes, etc). She seems so happy and I am sure she is gaining weight (although I have not weighed her). I think dog training is completely necessary and we've seen HUGE results in Nulla. Everything I posted about before is no longer a concern. Thanks for all the input though. Take Care :)
