Pooping in crate - why?

Basenji Training
  • Our basenji mix (Sophie) is 7 months old. She is crate trained and stays in the crate when we are not at home. She sleeps on a dog bed in our room at night.

Since we put up our Christmas tree yesterday and moved her crate about 15 feet to the other end of the room, she has pooped in her crate the last two times we have left for 4-5 hour periods. Before we left, we took her out to do her business and she is on a normal eating schedule. No new toys or blankets in the crate either - only change is the location of the crate.

We have come home and had to do the whole bath and crate cleaning thing. It's odd - she's only pooped one other time in her crate and only a couple of isolated incidences in the house at all - I would say she is 99% house trained.

No other pets or children in the home. Just us two.

Any ideas…? We are hoping this isn't a trend and if it is we want to nip it in the bud quickly!

    Thanks.

  • Have you tried moving the crate back to the original spot to see if this pooing stops?

  • Since this started when you moved the crate, I would say this certainly has something to do with it….

  • It is back in its original location and the christmas tree is blocking the front door. We shall see if this does the trick. We will give an update later tonight. Thanks!!!

  • She spent four hours in the crate and no accidents. Who knew that 15 feet would cause such stress???

  • my dog was just as picky once upon a time. first we tried the crate in our 4-season porch… no. then we tried livingroom... no. then we tried dining room... no. finally we had a winning location.. smack dab in the middle of the kitchen. lol. I put a nice piece of wood on top and viola... a table. beggars can't be choosers, right? I say if you have a happily crate trained B, let the crate be where it needs to be. glad to hear moving it back solved the problem!

OMG!! I'm laughing my butt off…re: "viola... a table". We do what we have to do for these brats!!

    Thanks for the laugh!!

  • Today was a "green light" as well - no poop while we were at work. Woo Hoo!

  • Congrats… Now you have a happy Basenji and a tree smack dab in front of your front door!!! LOL What we do for these little beasties...

Hey. I have my first Basenji and the diggs crate is great but I must admit it is heavy and bulky to take up and down the stairs. I had to buy an additional crate for travel because it was becoming too much. If you were looking for something to travel with I definitely wouldn’t recommend it especially because it is expensive. My puppy loves it though since he can see everything from it but you could get that from another crate.

Thanks for the link, Ivoss! And thanks for the wire suggestions, as well guys. Chris is actually a plumber, so we have a surplus of PVC lying around! I'm sure that's going to be Chris' next favorite project; once it gets going I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes. :) Any ideas on what the maximum space between pipes would be? We don't want him wriggling and squeezing his way through. This might really help for while I'm away!

I did, Pat. They are both Midwest and they wanted like $35 for each plus 20 shipping last I checked!! Foster&Smith seems like the cheapest. About $57 for one 36" and one 42" with shipping. Right now I've got George in a crappy old metal one (that has a rusted tray) and Pig is in one with a blanket. I decided I better get new ones just because I don't like him in the rusty one or Pig without a tray. I went to another pet store today and they wanted $40 and $37. Crazy! Thanks for the ideas guys…

@tanza: Do you use a wire crate? I have always used General Cage Crates.. and they have lasted for many, many years… I have ones that are 16 yrs old that are just in great condition. http://www.generalcage.com/Shopping/default.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1 We use wire crates too. The tray in the bottom locks so they can't push it out and its hard to destroy :D

mia only gets water when were there to watch her and take her out about 10-15 minutes later.. whenever shes taken out of the crate she goes straight outside.. and before we put her in we take her out again, whether thats 15 or 20 minutes or an hour. i've quickly learned that water goes RIGHT through them. so taking the water out of the cage should work! she has an occasional accident but not everyday.

You might also try a small crate… if the crate is too large, then they can poop or pee in one part and still have a clean area in another...
