Adding a puppy…

Basenji Talk

  • Hi guys,

I know you all are very experienced when it comes to things like this so I wanted to ask your opinions…

I'm doing my research to add a second basenji, this time a puppy, for Shango to have a playmate. He really loves other dogs and hasn't ever had an issue with other dogs. (And we were in a dog barkery where they are always coming in and out).

I've been in touch with a breeder in MI (Worrywort Kennels) about initial steps of securing a pup and she suggested a female puppy.

Is this true? Does a Male/Female pair work better than two males? Shango is a 2 year old male now and I thought I'd like another male but if that will be problematic, I'd love to hear!

  • Yes, it is typical that the best combo is male/female in 90% of the cases… and really you would be better off going with the usual considered best fit of male/female. However, the breeder will usually pick the pup that best suits the home and the situation. The breeder is the one that has raised the litter, observed their temperaments and if the one that can best judge what fits in what family. With my pups, people can't just come in and "pick" a pup, unless there might be two that would be equal... not often that happens.

  • Might I also say that the breeding that they did with Boo and Stitch.. should be an outstand litter. There is of course the chance that there will be Carriers in the litter (Boo clear and Stitch carrier) but no Fanconi…. Stitch comes from a wonderful line of great temperaments...

Thank you very much for the information!

  • Glad to help… and fingers crossed that the breeding takes.. one of those pups might just wind up here on the West Coast....

  • Male/female is the usual choice, but 2 boys (neutered) can be great together, best buddy boys. But as Pat said, go with your breeders recommendations and you can't go wrong!

  • Thh only thing you have to keep in mind that girls go into heat which can be a hassle whining male having to guard and often separate them during the critical period.
I have several basenji friends that have 2 even 5 boy´s and it works as they are of different ages puppies are integrated in to the pack when they are less then 12 weeks. But it takes a strong leader males rarely fight to kill more to show who´s the leader and when the other gives up they calm down not so with females they can be really nasty.
Are you going to show them and maybe in the future breed then yes a girl but if not i´d choose a boy as it´s cheaper to neuter a boy then sterilize a girl.Especially as you have to let her have one heat before surgery maybe it´s different over there. And as I said before you can have boy´s together that aren´t neutered. But as they´ve mentioned before go with your breeders recommendations.

    Good Luck,Michelle

I completely agree. I can't wait to see the pups from that litter. Boo also is a super sweet bitch, and comes from really sound temperaments. I really don't think you could go wrong getting a puppy from this litter…and yep...in my personal experience it always works better to get the opposite sex.

In the US, price is usually the same for a spay as it is for a neuter…. and usually people opt to spay before the first season in the US.

My sister is also a nurse. She used to organize flu clinics, and one thing that was mandated was that there was a loaded syringe of epinephrine handy. I hear you about the cost of office visits! My horse vet will come to the farm and wrestle with 3 horses floating teeth, give a couple of shots to each, and the bill is less than my Basenji's routine office visit!!! Ridiculous!

When we say responsible for the dogs forever - we do really mean forever. I have animals returned to me when they were 9 years old because of significant family issues or death of the owner - I currently have a 12 year old and a 7 year old that now live with me. Think about what that means - because even those of us who are prepared for that - really are never prepared for the impact on our families houses and other dogs. You say you want to keep 2 - be advised that the everyone hanging out together in basenji world is NOT the norm. Most can have 1 male and 1 female - if you are planning on keeping 2 - you may have a problem - not right away but eventually you are likely to do so. I am not sure that I remember who or where Chaos came from but fanconi testing and eye testing for PRA would be critical as well as thyroid screening. What titles does she have - is she a fast as the wind Field CH or Obedience or rally or conformation CH. That would allow you to have evidence that she has characteristics that are valuable to the breed as a whole and quite frankly if all you want are a couple more basenjis - there are many many out there that could use a forever home. In any event - think about it - it's not as easy as you think - if you are going to do it right - and finding good homes is also not as easy as you think. You may not have the experience in weeding out puppy mills who might want your pups and living where you do - you are in the midst of some that do produce basenjis.

@ibi_n_sane: 2 B-s are better then one :d yes, also a lot more work, as they can take over nasty tricks from each other, but on the other hand they play with each other and make themselves more tired, it is a joy to see 2 basenjis playing and enjoying each other, just beware that what 1 can do, 2 can do better and quicker and faster, and then I am talking about the mischievious stuff ;) whahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaahahahahahahha you are killing me here Kim :D He is!!! Just when he's near that Tri-thing of you…. hahahaha

I would suggest waiting until you get the little guy. Indi didn't have a name for abut 2 days. We had all these names in mind and none of them fit. Thats my two cents anyway (oh ya and because we did that I have a cool costume for him on haloween but I don't think I am going to get any cooperation on his end)

The individual pics are great and they are not on this site anywhere, just group shots of the same pups. Lady's and Isabelle's. They are just the cutest little things. I've picked the one I want :D Unfortunately there just isn't anymore room in the inn. Ashley
