Not to mention what you will call them when you're angry! 🙂 I also like two syllable names, but often end up using one syllable, e.g. "Perry" sometimes gets "Pay", and my horse, "Hero" often just gets "Roe".
Call/Registration Names
-
What's the difference between a "call" name and a "registration" name?
-
The registered name is the name that would show up in a pedigree, show catalog, registration papers. Call name is the name that you actually call the dog.
Here are my 4 dogs as examples.
Registered Name: Sherwood's In The Nick Of Time Call Name: Nicky
Registered Name: Sherwood's Shadow of the Moon Call Name: Rally
Registered Name: Kinetic Sourcery Call Name: Rio
Registered Name: Kinetic-Tanza Soul Music Call Name: Sophie
Sometimes people make the call name something that connects to the registered name, like Nick of Time and Nicky. Other times not, like all my other dogs.

And Mine
Registered Name: Zuri's Ti-Tanza Wazi Ajabu, Call Name Mickii
Registered Name: Bushbabies Obviously Jazz, Call Name OJ
Registered Name: Tanza's Kenyetta, Call Name Kristii
Registered Name: Tanza's Almazi Madini, Call Name Crystal
Registered Name: Emerant Fopaw TriWizard At Tanza, Call name Kobey -
This is Mauigirl. I'm at "Andrew's" house right now so I'll post for all of us, under his/her name (haha):
Possum Creek ZipNto Starfyre "Zip"
Sulou's Tri The Good Life "Riley" (rather obscure connection: life of riley= good life)Griffin's Pick Of The Litter "Booger" (self-explanatory)
Griffin's Lola Rennt "Lola" (reference to film)Also sometimes breeders pick themes for litters and the registered names tie all the dogs together according to the theme. Or sometimes a single word in a couple names ties two dogs who live in the same household together.
p.s. (That was mauigirl, not realizing she was logged in under the "Andrew" screenname!)
p.s.s. (carrie missed the first part!)p.p.s. (Mauigirl does not know the proper use of "p.p.s.")

Mine are:
Jumoke's Jazzy Lady: Jazzy
Jumoke South Pacific Keoki: Keoki. As you can see, we stuck pretty close with both names. I picked the name I wanted for Jazz and made it her registered name. The only litter requirement at that time was that it include Jumoke. In Keoki's case, Bryan said the litter theme was South Pacific, so we went with that and gave him a Hawaiian name. Personally, I wanted a boy named Satchemo to go with my girl Jazz, but oh well…. I've never really "gotten" having the call name and registered name be so different.
-
I'd have said registered name includes titles, no?
As far as them being different, well, Jet's reg name (w/o titles) is Jerlin's Saint or Sinner. The breeder had been calling him "Saint". I said "Linda, I can't call a basenji Saint". She replied "Well, his name is Saint or Sinner, so you could call him Sinner." I, in mock horror, told her "I'm not about to call a basenji Sinner!" So, I wanted to call him Jude since St Jude is the patron saint of Lost Causes (and therefor the patron saint of people who do agility with basenjis), but hubby nixed it. And since it was his dog . . .
Digital, is Idlewild-Jerlin's Digital. That's his name without titles, with titles adds about 2 lines to his name.
The name Zest! came before the dog. The name came to me and I knew it would be a great agility basenji name, but she was Makalika Jerlin Cherry Pop on her paperwork.
All of my dogs were registered before I got them.

Thanks! I updated Mick's info on the canine phenome project website and this is Mick's new registered name.
Irish Dingo Leaper of Abington - Irish cause we're Mc's, Dingo cause he carries a tattered stuffed babydoll around, Leaper cause he leaps instead of jumps, and Abington because that's our town.
What do you think? -
I'd have said registered name includes titles, no?
That is an interesting point. I guess since not all organizations recognize the other's titles, I didn't really think of them as part of the name. If I did then as an example looking at Rio.
To AKC she is FC Kinetic Sourcery SC
To ASFA, LGRA, and NOTRA she is FC Kinetic Sourcery SC, FCh, JOR
To UKC she is Kinetic Soucery -

Oh yeah.. forgot that minor detail, LOL.
Make that Ch. Jumoke's Jazzy Lady!
And keep the just plain ol' Jumoke South Pacific Keoki. Poor little guy had his career cut short by our decision to neuter.

I've never really "gotten" having the call name and registered name be so different.
Nicky named himself which is why his call name and registered name match.
I picked Rally's call name long before she ever born, 12 months or more. The theme for her litter was Moon to go with her mom's name Sherwood's Red Moon Rising, "Luna". So we picked the registered name to match the theme and kept the call name.
With Rio, her registered name was picked long before she was born. When it came to her call name, we decided that rather than match call name to registered name that we would name her after an Anime character since that is how found Rally's name, that way we would have a link between mom and daughter. Just like Rally's registered name links her to her mom even if our link is only known to us.
With Sophie, her call name is from an Anime and her registered name is from the same book series as we got Rio's registered name so there is a method to our madness even it only makes sense to me and my husband.

Just because he is neutered doesn't mean he has to remain title-less. You could give lure coursing a try.
-
Same with mine… I didn't put their "titles" with them....Registered Name: Zuri's Ti-Tanza Wazi Ajabu, Call Name Mickii She is MBIF DC in front and SC, LCM 7 at the end
Registered Name: Bushbabies Obviously Jazz, Call Name OJ, he is CH in the front
Registered Name: Tanza's Kenyetta, Call Name Kristii, She is DC in front and SC, LCM at the end
Registered Name: Tanza's Almazi Madini, Call Name Crystal, She is DC in front and SC,CD,RA,CGC at the end
Registered Name: Emerant Fopaw TriWizard At Tanza, Call name Kobey and he is JC and CGC at the end...
These are only a few of our "kids".....And many of the names, both registered and call were decided before they were born...

Exactly!!!! or Rally…

Exactly!!!! or Rally…
Or Agility. or Sprint Racing.
There are so many titling events that you can do with your dog.
-
This is a neat thread…
My Bs are:
Ch. Eldorado n Akuaba's Bejeweled (Ruby)
Am. Can. Ch. Sternhimmels Generis Sui (Brando)Both show dog retirees, Ruby was adopted as an adult and Brando is a permanent foster (he's co-owned by Eldorado & Terry Boomir), so I did not name them. In my case, both kids' call names actually relate well to their registered names.
Jewel - Ruby and Sui Generis (of its own kind) - Brando...Marlon Brando was definitely sui generis! The cool part for me with Brando is that one of my all time favourite movies is Apocalypse Now...so it is funny that I'd have a dog named Brando when I didn't name him. -
So here are all of mine with all their titles.
DC Sherwood's In The Nick Of Time SC, RN, LCM, JOR
DC Sherwood's Shadow of the Moon SC, FCh, JOR
FC Kinetic Sourcery SC, FCh, JOR
FC Kinetic-Tanza Soul Music SCCo-owner of

EL D's (retired show champian) registered name (without titles) is Sonbar's Iced Identity (from a litter using stored sperm/ova hence all the Ice in their names: Imperial Ice, Indigo Ice, and Incandescent Icicle).

Wasn't that frozen semen from Sally's Bravo? He was such an awesome dog.
That is another thing with the registered names..sometimes it gives a clue to who the parents, and possibly grandparents are.

Yeah, I've thought of that – he does love to run, and he's way faster than Jazz. But I live an hour from the nearest events and I don't feel like I have the time to put into it for him and/or take away from family. Then there are gas prices.
AND I'm a big chicken. When they were showing, I just had to show up with the dogs and Bryan did all the work. The thought of figuring out the hows and whens and all of lure coursing just intimidates me.
It DOES seem a little unfair to him, because I am sure he would love it.
