Basenjis mute aka barkless

  • This is for new folks who have never heard b's make a racket.;)

To, me, I love this sound, but I can imagine a neighbor not being so crazy about it.

as far as I know, these are not rescue b's…just wanted to share their singing.

  • oh my…. that's something else.... HA

  • Oh Dear!

We live downtown very near the train an trolley tracks and if a train comes through that is pulling its horn a lot Bongo will join in and howl at a pitch perfectly matched to the train. Not for as long as this, though, and without any other B's harmonizing. (Fiji just shakes her head.) And I worry about my neighbors. Ay yi yi!

  • OMG too funny! My own house sounds like that frequently and with breeding season coming up, it's going to be one chorus after another.

  • Our dogs NEVER howl like that. Makes me kinda bummed…though, maybe not after listening to that chorus...I wonder whose dogs those are? Anybody wanna fess up?

Querk has occasionally howled during 'the season' but only once or twice when outside, and NEVER if anyone is watching him. Ours also never join in at the howling at a National. I guess they are just more quiet by nature....Half of ours have never yodeled either.

For those that haven't experienced it...imagine that sound magnified by 10-20 fold..and that is the experience at a National. It happens at least twice a day, and spreads through the grounds like a wave...it is VERY cool!

  • Do the yodelers that you have yodel on a regular basis, Andrea? My male, Nicky, does not yodel but has joined in at the National. In fact, at the 1999 Nationals he sat down on the examine table and threw his head back to wail with everyone. It was good that we had a basenji breeder judge that year, she just laughed and called him a silly boy.

My girls will sing all the time. Rally is a natural yodeler and Sam has always encouraged her to sing frequently. Her daughters both join in and when we get home from work are greeted by our lovely female chorus. No matter how often Nicky hears them though, he never seems compelled to join in.

At a show years ago, our ring time was 8am in October… at 6am when we were all walking our B's (there were about 5 of us in RV's all parked together) one group of B's started howling... and even B in the 5 RV's started... what was really cool, was in the early morning "darkness" the RV's seems to shimmer...ggg

  • Man I am so bummed that Zaire is such a quiet girl. I would love to hear her sing. I suppose it is for the best though as Charlie is a LOUD boy sometimes…the one thing with the two of them that I find SOOO funny is that it apears Charlie has learned how to make Basenji sounds from Zaire. He will whine yodel at her when they are playing. It's really cute as sometimes I cant tell if it's him or her making tho noise. :)

Blondie is the only one who yodels regularly…and she will do it on request if the setting is right. Bella yodels only when she feels it...usually in the morning when she is about to be let out of her crate, or if she is trying to entice another dog to play with her. Her son, Hippo has only yodeled a few times, and almost always at another dog. I think we could probably train him to do it on request, though...

Querk and his daughter, Luna have never yodeled...but can shriek with the best of them. And Ivy yodeled maybe twice in her life, when she was very young, and we had come home from a vacation without her. It was a very gravelly, grodelly sound. Pretty much, I can say that my Select dogs don't yodel, and my Taji dogs do ;)

BTW, I also use the shunning method with my basenji. He gets into everything and so I have to baby proof my house. Sometimes I leave a drink on the table and he tries to drink out of it and when I catch him with it, I let him know I am mad! I growl at him and then turn my back to him and he gets very upset. When he does anything I do want him to do, all I have to do is growl at him and he comes over to me bows his head and curls up in my lap. I guess it is an instinctual reaction to submit to his pack leader. He hates it when I ignore him in any way. He is funny, because he will sit down and look at me and whine or try to jump up on the chair with me if he thinks I am mad at him. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk

Here's what I know: 2 bites to one foster mom. The first was over chicken, trying to take it away from him. The second was over going into the crate. I have not seen any aggression over the crate unless you're forcing him in, he goes in great with a little treat, and now we don't even have to do that. He sleeps in the crate and goes in there when he's not supervised or we're not home. I think she needed stitches for both, but she's older and disabled.

@Janneke: Sahel is a gorgeous girl! I hope she finds a good home soon! This is what I don't understand.. The pup is about a year old and the owner wants to get rid of her because: "I'll be traveling and working more this year, so I'm finding a new home for a beautiful and sweet female Basenji" What about thinking before getting a dog :( It is possible that the owner has a new job, something possibly unexpected especially with the sketchy job market in the US presently. In any case it sounds as if the owner cares about her and would like to find a good home.

@BasenjiDiva: Wow, Vicki. Although we are down in Savannah, we also have a place up between Young Harris and Hiawassee. Maybe we could meet up sometime. Don't know how our little female hellion would do with your female though. Our male would probably be okay. Also would love to hear more about your petsitting business that you mentioned. When we are up there we would sometimes like to be able to leave for awhile without worrying about the beasties. Pat Hello - Yes, I would love to meet you when you visit your vacation home. razzcinn at aol dot com. I have two female Basenjis that are doing well together, but I, too, would be concerned about another female Basenji. Monday, I'm interviewing a retired older lady who pet sits and she will stay in the home all day and night, if needed. I need a dependable sitter, too. I often babysit for people who would like to go to dinner and get away w/o worrying about their pets. If I can't help you, I'm certain I can recommend several other dependable sitters.

Oh, I don't. I can only "have" 2 dogs, but I sure work like heavens to get the dogs matched from the rescue group to the home. Win/win. worth more than gold to find the right place that cares for the dogs forever.
