Phoenix is a 10 year old, neutered, purebred basenji who is in desperate
need of a guardian angel. His owners have turned him into a WI shelter
specifically to be euthanized due to possible separation anxiety – it is
not known if Phoenix actually suffers from separation anxiety as the shelte=

Additionally, Phoenix has an injured eye of unknown cause - he is receiving

  • Do you know where in Wisconsin this little guy is? It is a tempting offer, at least to foster temporarily, but I am leary as our house is not big, and I would really have to think about whether I could actually handle two of them…thats the real issue. Especially since I work during the day, which would be problematic if he does have separation anxiety...However, I would be interested in more information...I hope there is someone out there that can help him...

  • Post these questions to Shawn.
Maybe she can give you more info.

  • I just emailed Shawn…asked a lot of questions (hope thats ok). I am completely new to this (never even heard of a basenji before I got mine last year...lol) but depending on his situation maybe I could be of some help...I am not sure if my lifestyle makes me the right person though...we'll see what Shawn says.

  • Sharron have you contacted member "Dash" ? From Ohio? I think she was open to perhaps fostering Banjo - maybe she would consider Phoenix?????

It's on the 3rd page of Banjos thread if I recall correctly..I really hope he gets placed… 10 years old, breaks my heart.. :(

  • I did not post to them, as I did not remember this.
    But thanks for reminding me.

  • Sigh, I had forgotten that we can't post member to member. sigh, so hopefully Dash will see this post and repond.

  • Good news! I contacted Shawn, and got this response…
Thanks for checking on Phoenix. We now have a plan in place for him so you're off the hook :-).
I am not sure what the plan is, but I am glad things are looking up for Phoenix!

  • Wonderfulll!!!

  • Great to hear! I am glad everything is working out for him. I have been swamped lately and haven't gotten on. Sorry.

Some things cannot be fixed. I urge you to get a qualified behaviorist (veterinary) to evaluate him. If he is truly unstable, rehoming him is not fair to him or the new home.

My dogs are secured in crates or the bedroom (Rotties were okay behind a gate, I'd never trust my basenjis with one) if the door is open. Every time, every single time, for my entire adult life. So yeah, dog bolts, the person failed to secure the dog. Unless some person enters if you don't know it, tree falls on house, burglar comes in, police raid your house by mistake etc… if YOU open a door, YOU are responsible, not the dog.

I feel like people need to be just as careful when choosing a rescue as they are when choosing a breeder. Rescues have been found to be hoarders, to be breeders labelling their dogs as rescues as a marketing ploy, or like PETA, to kill 97% of animals they "rescue". The impression I got of this rescue was that it was not one I wanted to work with because they seemed to hold some extreme views. I am delighted to hear that I was wrong and that this is a good rescue. The situation with the "breeder" is horrible, and I am glad this girl is finally being cared for. I agree that the breeder has earned herself a place in you know where. After Estelle passed away while my MIL was in the process of trying to adopt her she is a little gun shy. It is amazing how attached you can get to an animal you haven't even met. -Nicole

Dear Basenji Forums Community, I am sure many of you have been wondering what was the outcome of this rescue effort. Well, let us tell you it was unexpected. A rescue mission that was supposed to unite our community to help save a dog turned into a complete opposite and brought us apart. I would like to thank everyone who stepped in to help and put their time and money to attempt to save this dog and offer him a life without neglect. Members who volunteered themselves for this mission had many years of experience with the breed, with both ill-tempered rescues, and those that have been fabulous. They had enough experience to make a determination whether to attempt this or not. While this dog had issues it is imperative to keep in mind he was a just a puppy, and someone was willing to give him a chance. Others may have disagreed on the reasoning for attempting this, but at no time they were given the right to derail this mission and use this forum to publicly attack and discredit members whose only intentions were to help save this dog. As a result of the actions of certain members our whole community suffered: The dog was not saved Forum rules about code of conduct were broken Existing members were publicly offended and discredited New members were exposed to public arguments Our community lost potential member referrals Members had to be suspended from the forum It is really too bad and sad, because we built this community to bring together basenji owners, breeders, and exhibitors throughout the world. To be hopeful that they could help one another and dogs in need. Thank you again for trying to help. All donation have been refunded and no more assistance will be attempted. Which, of course, is unfortunate for the basenji in need. As a last note please remember to review our forums code of conduct and forum rules and to treat others with utmost respect. Like the Basenjis, each of us is unique with our unique character, but our admiration and respect for this breed have brought us together and make us a community. Disregard for our forum community rules will not be tollerated on this forum. Please contact Basenji Forums staff directly at admin@basenjiforums.com if you have any questions or concerns. This thread is closed for public discussion.
