• If she has had a distemper booster after 1 year of age, I would not be too concerned about getting it boostered right away. Since she has been through so much, I would be careful not to stress out her immune system anymore than necessary.

If she is in need of her Rabies, get that done and make sure you keep the vet record with your name on the Rabies Certificate because that will help you establish ownership if it ever becomes an issue. Also, since she had such a huge infestation of ticks when you brought her home, make sure you talk to your vet about testing for Lyme and Erlichia since both are tick borne and if caught and treated early have much a much better prognosis. Any other vaccinations should not be done for at 3 weeks after the rabies vaccination to avoid stressing her immune system.

  • What an absolutly beautifull girl. So glad that you and the BF stepped in to help her out.

when the vet tech heard about the ticks she suggested testing for lymes. i think of the 30 or so we found 3 were deer ticks.

  • Not really a bad idea… I know that Lymes is pretty common in many parts of the country

  • @DiegosMom:

Pat- My vet does shots every year (I've had both my dogs less than a year so both have gotten shots once from me/BRAT so far) so if I want to do them on a 3yr year schedule, do I just tell my vet thats what I want?

I feel like the vet tech/vet will argue with me if I say thats what I want.. anyone else have this problem with their vet?

Alot of vets around here require yearly vaccines even if the vaccine is good for two or three years. If your going to have Diego boarded anytime soon it may be difficult to find a kennel that will accept a boarder who hasn't had their vaccines updated yearly and sometimes bordetella done every six months. Since we occasionally board the dogs when we are out of town I go ahead and get theirs done yearly but I usually have someone stay with the cats rather than board them so I do theirs less often. That might make a difference on how often you vaccinate.

If the vet tech argues with you just ask them what the manufacturer recommends.

  • She's so sweet! Nice pics!

  • My poor Jack got Lyme bc his last owner left him outside perminatly and he was covered in ticks when he gave him to the pound…it flares up sometimes but the meds work great with him. What makes the ears black exactly?? Never seen that before...THANKS And Congrats!

  • Black ears usually indicates prolonged exposure to cold weather. 😞 sad.

  • Oh…yes sad. Thank you

  • Here's a pic of Miles's ears the day we rescued him. Poor little ham. 😞

And after I tried cleaning them with mild soap and water…

    A couple months later…Getting better!!

And here's after almost a year…the ears healed with neosporin. 🙂

    Now THAT'S a happy Ham!! 🙂

  • You might actually have an argument that the ex abandoned Maggie. She was left at her mother's house, where the mother said the ex never was. The mother was going to take her to the pound, another sign that she was not under the control and care of the ex. Also, Maggie was obviously neglected, adding to the argument that the ex abandoned her. There is no way that I would give her back. Make sure you document all of the veterinary care that you are providing. Whose name is Maggie registered in?

  • i actually dont think she IS registered. she was just a pet store puppy. the man who bought her just gave her to the pet store because she kept peeing in the house ( umm.. DUH she's a puppy for crying out loud ) but because they had no documents or anything on her, she was given away, not even sold. Dan switched her over to his name the day after we got her at the vets office, and his ex owes the vet $700 so the vet wouldn't even let maggie come in with the ex. idk if that counts for anything.

  • Wow, the pet store took a dog just because someone gave it too them?
I am no lawyer, but if the pup is stolen and I am not saying she is the pet shop can be libal for a lawsuit.
Course, any store that sells companion animals should be shut down, imo.

  • well thats the impression i got from the story. i could be wrong.

  • I know it's been awhile but i thought a little update on maggie might be nice 🙂 shes now up to date on all of her shots, her fecal floatation was negative and they tested for 4 different tick born diseases and she was negative for all of them. She weighed a little over 20 pounds 2 weeks ago at the vet's office. He looked back in his notes and found that a year ago she was only 13 pounds and last january she was only 15 (we got her in may) A three year old basenji should NOT weigh only 13 pounds. she is very small in stature, but still.. 13 pounds is ridiculous.. it made me SICK. but shes lost the nasty nappy fur she had and is so soft now and her ears are back to normal 🙂 she's still having accidents occasionally and yesterday she ate a hole in the couch. 😮 but she is doing awesome.. ill post some newer pics later

  • if you notice the back leg thats stretched out, thats the ankle that was broken. you can see its a lot larger than normal.

  • She looks super and you have done a great job with her….. love these happy endings!!!!! Way to go and Kudos!!!

  • Pat is right…YOU DONE GOOD!

  • Great to hear she is doing so well! She looks so happy being with you 🙂

  • Great to hear – hope all continues well.
