I just got a bag of Mother Hubbard's dog treats, and one of the flavors is charcoal? WHat is the benefit for dogs to have charcoal? I just thought it was kind of a odd ingredient to serve your pup.

I saw those in the store & thought the same thing! I don't know that I will buy anymore Mother Hubbard treats though since Dallas doesn't seem to like them very much. He will actually turn them down! Yea a Basenji turning down food?!? Haha

If it was activated charcoal (not the same as charcoal briquettes for the grill) it comes from certain plant parts and is used to help ease digestive problems like gas and diarhea. But this is in humans - I have no idea if it works for dogs.

It is supposed to work the same in animals as humans.

oh good, I guess less gas can't be a bad thing :P
At least there are other flavors in the bag I can mix it up, because I read that too much charcoal will absorbe the good nutrients as well -

Maybe I should try them on Dallas afterall. His gas over the last few days has been TERRIBLE. I have no idea what has been causing it either

That is what I am hoping is causing his! We have officially switched him over to Merrick's but I think I went a little too quickly, didn't use Eukanuba mixed enough days. Mark [boyfriend] thinks it will be better after his tummy is more adapted to the new/higher quality food. I hope so though because this past week he's been clearing out rooms!!!
Do you give Mia any kind of rawhide? I got Dallas this yucky smelling rawhide thing from Merrick's & I thought maybe that could be causing the stinky & more frequent gas…

I don't give rawhide.
I think it can really make a basenji sick.
My b's love the Billysticks and tendons.
raw knuckle bones are a big treat as well. -

Lol nope no rawhide. Were going really slow with the switch because I did it way too fast at first and she exploded… If you know what I mean. Her little farts are loud too! Lol made me laugh out loud the other night. :D

Actually I just checked their website & it isn't rawhide afterall, it's bone. It is called a Rib in a Blanket & is rib bone wrapped in rawhide but he pulled the bone out & so I put the rawhide part away & he has only been chewing the bone. Could that still be the cause of his bad gas?
