Strange experience & Question

Basenji Talk
  • When I first got Sahara I read that Basenjis do NOT fetch, I was like oh yea, well we will see. I started teaching Sahara and she caught on fast. We play everyday in the house for excerise, she will go after it, and jump up on the recliner(where I am sitting) and jump back down to wait for me to throw it again, and again. But once she is tired of it, that's the end!!!!! She will even put it in my hand if I am not paying attention to her, sometimes she scratches at my hand if I am on the computer, I look down on the carpet and there sits her ball, or stuffed squirrel. Smart Furbaby, haha!!!!

  • Magnum will fetch, as long as it's a treat that's thrown. He never brings it back though {SIGH}.

    ;) :p ;) :p ;) :p

  • So with Zest's retrieving skills, if you ever enter her in a dog show, I suppose you can sign her up in the Sporting Group! :D :D

    You got a cool B!

  • Yea, I've had b's that will retrieve inside, but this was outside on a dirt agility field. I don't have many tennis balls around (they're bad for teeth) and she's never shown interest in the malinois's soccer ball. She just does retrieve the blue bird (designated agility-only toy), but I worked really hard to cultivate that. My brindlewonderkid will retrieve a dumbell inside, but tends to do a little of the bone-dance thing with it. I clicker trained him to do that. It was just a "let's see what we can do with a clicker" type thing. But Z picked this ball up all on her own and brought it to me. It's not fuzzy, nor does it squeek, so I was really surprised she continued to retrieve it. She acted like it was a real prize and was so proud of herself. Of course I will try to cultivate this. But if it doesn't work out, oh well, like Camelot, we had one brief shining moment.

  • mia and rocky both fetch! only for a few tosses.. but its still fetching none the less :)

  • My b/iggy mix loves to retrieve. He will actually drop it on the ground after a few minutes if you don't take it from his mouth. Tennis balls are his favorite, but any of his stuffed animals will do too. I was surprised too when he started!

  • I had my blk/wht, Nika out in a very large field when she was about 7 months old and she showed up with a large jack rabbit and just dropped it in front of me. That's fetching!

  • Shaye will not usually bring things back outside, but inside, whatever we throw she brings back, so we'll keep throwing it - I don't think this is actually retrieval, it's her making us play so she can chase the toys and rev up for the Basenji-500 which eventually happens when she gets excited enough about chasing the toys and bringing them back to be thrown again.

  • Yep, Ive got a retreiver too :)…

Saba will retreive in the house, both tennis balls and his stuffed toys, (well, they were stuffed till he destuffed them, then lost all interest in them ;)). He will only do it for a little while though...

Ochre, on the other hand, will look at the thrown object, then look up at me with a "Well you threw it, you retreive it look...". Precious little miss she is:D

  • Gossy will "retrieve" certain toys (never balls though) - she'll retrieve in order to get me to toss her toy across the room since she can't toss it that far. :D

  • This is really the one thing that Jaycee is good at she will go after her ball a toy anything and play and play. Jaycee seems to have set her bedtime at night at about 9:00 to 9:30. So my son will play throwing her ball or toy what ever she wants getting her really tried before she goes to bed every night. Sometimes she good for 15 mins other times half hour but she has fun. I hope she don't stop this is fun.

@Maya: When i was first in touch with Maya's breeder i asked lots of questions about health testing. I knew the temperment of Maya's mum (which is fantastic!!) as i had met her several times, so i asked all about Dad. Having witnessed some horrific temperments around the ring over here, health and temperment were a priority for me… I also would have been concerned if the breeder hadn't asked LOTS of questions of me. She wanted to know if i'd researched the breed, if i knew they weren't necessarily easy to live with (and explained!) and just lots of questions about me to make sure she knew if i would be a responsible basenji owner. I think with such a unique breed you need a responsible breeder who is looking for a permenant home who has done their research :) This was totally my experience as well. I was very aware that it wasn't just us interviewing a breeder, but the breeder getting to know us. I was really grateful to see that our amazing breeder took the time to make sure that we knew what we were getting into. It would make me exceptionally leery if a breeder handed over a Basenji, no questions asked.

The only reasons I would not crate little bs with big bs is (1) I don't want any fighting so you would have to play that one by ear (2) If the little one potties in the crate accidentally the big b has to suffer too. But I only have 1 so thats all I could think of

On tv this morning they showed some dogs that were to be adopted at Petsmart from the Humane Society. One of them they said was a basenji/terrier mix. That dog was huge and he didn't look anything like a basenji to me. No batwing ears but the tail was curled.
