Puppy pads and other potty training ?

  • I would never use them either as it is twice the work and training. So much quicker to train them to go out right from the start.

    AMEN!!!! :D

  • You know I also plan on bringing one/two with me for the car ride back from Ocala, since it's a 2.5 hour drive! I know we plan on stopping half way during the drive but just in case I want to have a pad because I certainly don't want the pee in my car! :p

  • That sucks! Haha. I know we plan on bringing our cage with us also to pick him up (just in case) but I doubt I will able to resist holding him the whole way :p

Fair warning –- Keoki just tore up the pads on the seats of the car and peed on the seat anyway....:( He is such a turd:rolleyes:

Hopefully Dallas won't since he'll probably end up in my lap the entire way home…except when we stop half way for a quick potty break ;)

  • When mine are babies I do paper train them within the kitchen - then gradually reduce the amount of paper until just one section remaining. Then comes the interesting part - when they head for that paper - I know they need to go out. I also have a 'paper' by the door we use to go out to the dog yard - so head for paper - go outside - pretty quickly don't need paper at all as they go to the door.

With adult dogs who know the 'door' I find that the puppies just follow and the previous generation teaches the new generation.

(guess they only need me to bring the food)

and they don't tear the paper? Geez, mine LOVE LOVE LOVE to shred paper. No paper on the floor is safe. I am amazed that yours leave it alone and actually use it properly!

Our rescue, Kell was so easy, he trained us. He has slept in bed with us from the first night. he would wake up to potty a couple of times a night at first. He would arf, and continue to arf louder & louder until one of us woke up and got up, took him outside, praised him while he pottied, and then we would go back to bed. He never had an accident in the bed. That has dwindled down to not going until my husband gets up to go to work around 5:45.

Yes, my girl was well socialized. It's not that my voice is so startling to her. It's more that she doesn't like to be scolded and will find a way in the not too distant future to repay me with her opinion. Since I learned a while ago to not do this, I haven't suffered her wrath in some time but when I did it could be anything from finding she had peed or pooped just out of my sight to finding something I value that had just been totally shredded. I found that I could scold her reasonably for what she had done but then I needed to immediately reinforce my love for her so that she knew she didn't need to rebel against me. This has worked well for me. Shouting at her would always reap me a grim reward in the end.

@NerdyDogOwner: On the topic of pee, I have a question/issue. I have noticed Gizmo seems to quite often have a drop hanging on his penis a lot of the time. Also it's sometimes white, almost as if it's sperm. Now the first thing I thought of was your typical puberty signs, wetdreams etc. since his blanket also has quite a few drops stains on it. Is this normal? Or should I be worried/aware about something else? Possibly just sloughed skin cells.

@lisatest: Does a puppy have soft poop and as the puppy gets older the poop becomes more solid? It has been a while since I had a puupy so I can't remember. No… a puppy should also have a solid poo...

@Mantis: when Cairo cries in his kennel ( in there with Caesar) it means he has to go to the bathroom….i have found that immediate potty once out of the kennel is a great way to help with the potty training.... yes I take her out after sleeping in the crate and when ever she has a nap it helps ~Kat

Yes husbands can be a trial at times. When my Kalya was dying from lymphoma hubby said no dogs for awhile! Kalya left on tues. for the bridge, on sat. we got a Basenji/Aussie mix, who was gonna be put down, and then3 months later got Mata Hauri Samuel to co-own. Now hubby is going in sept to the BOCA to see the african exhibit and meet some friends. Said he would love to at least see a tri! ggggg Carole
