My Basenji Mutt

Show Off Your Dog
  • He's a cutie!

(Hey, we have that same windmill thingy!)

  • Adorable. He looks very…. long.

  • Cute, do you know for sure he is part Basenji?

  • The simple answer is no, I don't know for sure. The clues that lead me to my assumption that he is are these:

    1. He rakes his paws over his ears and down his muzzle. A lot.
    2. His curled tail, and wrinkled forehead have the right look, as well as his stance.
    3. He really wants to chase any moving target, like cars. But I have been working on him with that, so he doesn't, as long as I am around and attentive.
    4. He is a little aloof, and a little cautious around strangers.

  • Another identifer - Has Scooter munched on your clothes, i.e. underwear - taken them from an open drawer or laundry basket and/or does he relish kleenex or toilet paper? Could be typical for many breeds, but irresistable for most B's.

BTW - I have 2 B mixes and welcome. Scooter is really cute! He's got the lab going for him. I see the little white tip on his tail and I think he's got the eyes too.

He is very cute, but many dogs do these things… he looks more like a lab/maybe fox hound mix...

LOL…that would be a perfect identifier and settle the question for sure :D :D ...too funny!

    Good point! Especially the underwear.

He is cute, and of course you are welcome here! He looks like he might have B in him…hard to tell.

  • He is so handsome! Welcome (again)!

  • I might be inclined to believe foxhound if he didn't weigh less than 40 lbs. That And neither a lab or a foxhound have a tail that goes straight up and curls over the back.

Whippet is a possibility, but again that doesn't explain the tail curling over the back. Granted his tail is longer and not as bushy as a pure Basenj, but then he isn't pure Basenji.

Pugs have a wrinkled forehead and a curled tail, but he has the longer neck and a gait more like a sight hound, and his coat is shorter but not the double coat of a lab, so I am kind of ruling out pug.

He may be a big pile of mixes from parents who were mixed. I don't really care what breed he is, he is a great dog. I think I am right on basenji, but if not, it's no big deal. And no he hasn't chewed my underwear. He did chew on the couch cushion where I usually sit.

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your replies! Rex just had his first vet visit (first with me at least), and he was given a clean bill of health. The vet that I saw also agrees with a lot of you that he looks like a Min Pin more than a Basenji, but he is likely still mixed with something because he's a bit too big to be a pure Min Pin. I've looked at a few DNA Dog Breed tests online, and they seem to range in price and in quality. It seems like some of the cheaper (~$50) tests are fake, but they go all the way up to almost $250 for the higher quality ones. Do any of you have experience with these DNA tests / have a brand you found reputable? I'll be sure to post the results of any of the tests with this forum! Thanks again, and Rex is doing really great in his new home!! [image: 1559586518913-img_3707-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586546977-img_3720-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586568474-img_3708-resized.jpg]

I'm originally from California so that is where we got them. I will have to ask my mom if she knows anything about their breeding. They were both over a year old when they came to us. The male was an escaper. My parents had to add an extention on our 6 ft wall because he would jump it. Even then he found a way to get out. We couldnt figure it out for the longest time how he did it. He had found a window upstairs that didn't latch, he would nose it open get on the roof then jump to the wall and from the wall to the ground. The male in pic is prob just sniffing We were working on that bedroom so there were alot of new scents. I cant recall him ever barooing. The female though was very vocal. After talking to my mom, I don't have any more info. Both dogs were given up by their owners because they became to much for them to handle. Alphy the male was a handful being an escaper, Lady was a great counter surfer. Alphy liked all dogs and people. Lady only liked people. But other than that they were sweet and loving dogs.

Thank you very much for the info. I will have to try the time out. He was crate trained as far as being house broken, but now when I put brownie in the crate all he does is whine.. I do have 2 older dogs. one that plays with him and the other, well he just growls at brownie. The mother that was there when I got Brownie was a white shepard, maybe that is where the broad nose comes in.

lol yea most basenji's are actually yodelers i was just messing with the harmonica one time and she came up to me and sat down next to me and started to sing. The spoon was funny it happened once and it was her way of telling us that she hasnt been fed. When she grabbed the spoon im asking my mom maybe shes hungry? and my mom says oh right she hasnt been fed yet, she didnt want to give back the spoon though
