Tail Chasing

Basenji Talk
  • Does anyones elses B chase thier tail? Tiggy has started doing it. And then tonight he was rolling around tugging on it having a wonderful time intertaining himself, then he crashes out. His tail uncurls when he sleeps so I lifted it up and said "Dave look he tugged on it so much Tiggy straightend his tail out" LMAO

  • Mine would spin around at high speed where his feet would actually leave the ground to chase it. Just one spin. People would be so amused by it. He would only do it at home.

  • Tayda will chase her tail. She acts as if she's never seen it before and is startled by seeing it attached to her rump! its so funny.

  • Sometimes our will chase and it is amazing how fast they can go after it. Also, sometimes they will have an itch and corkscrew themselves into the ground gradually to stretch back to it.

  • Taj (4 years old) is my most energetic tail chaser and Ellie (almost 12) does it from time to time, but I was astounded the other day when I caught Marco Polo (probably 15!) doing a couple rounds! :)

  • Senji's a little too chubby to lick his butt anymore, so when he gets an itch there, it looks like he's chasing his tail.

  • YES!! C3 does the same thing…I always feel guilty that maybe he's got more energy to burn so he chases his tail. If I'm REALLY feeling guilty I'll take him out for a quick run around the yard or a walk around the block :)

You need a "stand" command for more advanced obedience. Also, it is good to teach sit from standing and from down. Many (most?) dogs understand "sit" as an action, not a position, so they may know it from standing but don't have a clue when they are lying down. :)

@khanis: Very bizarre… I heard a story like this years ago but had forgotten all about it. Story was VERY similar. Thanks for the jog down memory lane. Wish you could remember. The story behind the story for me. I must have been in 4th or 5th grade (so would have been 1971 or 72) and had to write a story along the lines of Paul Bunyan, a tall tale. My mother was helping me and told me this story as an example and being the rotten kid I was I wrote it down and turned it in . Since its almost 40 years later it's not exactly as told given the years and memory loss I filled in what I couldnt remember. I do recall my teacher telling me that my story was not a tall tale not sure what grade I got on it more than likely it was what I deserved:(

@Patty: I too can't imagine why on earth anyone would crop a Basenji's tail! Perhaps the tail was damaged? I do know that the Liberian black and whites which have now been crossed with Central African Basenjis, occasionally had their tails cut by native Liberians to avoid monkeys grabbing them by their longer tails. This was some years ago and I don't know whether they are still kept for hunting in that country. Perhaps someone who knows modern day Liberia could say? That would make the only sense. I've seen videos of monkeys swinging down from trees and grabbing a tigers tail repeatedly. Also grabbing their ears. The monkeys were lucky as the tigers came really close to grabbing them for lunch. :D

Ellen i'm sure Tupper is just having fun, his tail is a ready made toy, lol. Has anyone ever had a Basenji that did a parculiar pattern of movement similar to a cow with BSE. Benji used to suddenly do this sort of staggering dance that involved him wagging his head to one side and downwards. It looked a bit like an exaggerated playbow. At the time there was a lot of footage on tv of cows with mad cow disease and we used to say he was doing his mad cow act.
