I cannot imagine committing to buy a puppy without seeing the animal and if possible the sire and dam. OTOH, a rescue (or adoption of an older dog) is a different thing. My last two Basenjis came to me sight unseen, and turned out to be wonderful dogs, but the breeders I got them from wanted to place their dogs in an experienced Basenji home, and I only paid the cost of getting the dogs to me. One came by air, one was personally transported to me by his breeder. If she hadn't been happy with what she found I expect she would have taken him back with her when she left. I also had to commit to return him if ever I couldn't keep him. Good breeders care about where their dogs end up.

I have to travel next week for work and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I have not been to DC since high school so I am curious about some things. I am staying at Lombardys and have a conference at the conference/convention center close to there. Any good restaurants? I have heard bad things about the cab drivers so I was curious if anyone else has had issues. Thanks!
I am headed up to Chicago at the end of this month for a wedding. Actually Des Plains. I have been there once last year and loved it. Can't wait to get back.

I alwasy use the Metro - fast easy etc. IF you want to do any tourist stuff - all the museums have a sheet for short tours to accomodate those that only have 30 min and want to see the Monet's etc. Doing the night tour of the monuments is also quite moving - esp Korea and the wall.

I agree…I was really touched by the Korean War monument, more so than even than the other, more well known ones.

I'm with dmcarty take the metro. I lived in that area for 4 yrs, the metro is much better. As far as resturants theres not much for food around the convenction center that it's normal you'd find anywhere else. There are lots of good resturants in DC but none that I can think of as for names because I never spent to much time as far as eating goes in DC, there is startbucks everywhere though, and thats a plus in my book any day

The last time I was in the DC area, the taxis charged a flat fee according to a "zone" system. The taxi driver should have a chart available to show you how much it will cost to go from point A to point B.

Thanks for all your suggestions. We had a great time. The metro is amazing. I want one here. I have used the BART in San Fransisco when I visited my aunt in middle school. I would definately use it. I hate driving in traffic. Anyway, D.C. is not like it was when I was there in high school (15+ years ago). It was so clean. I was a little disappointed in Chinatown. the WWII memorial was new and very nice. I could not believe there were snipers on the white house! Very cool. Overall a positive experience. I want to go back and take Greggy so he can see everthing.

I just saw this post and wanted to apologize. I live here and had I seen this, I could have given you some additional advice as I live here and have for 9 years. Next time you come this way, hit me up and I'll give you the 411!
As for the rest of you, all confirmed. The metro here is quite good compared to other cities. The cab system is on the zone system. The more zones you cross, the more it costs, but if your driver takes you in a big circle to get from point A to point B, he is only allowed to charge you for the shortest route zones. This only applies to DC cabs, though. If you are in a VA or MD cab, they use a meter. If you take a DC cab out of DC into VA, you'll be negotiating the fare since the zones don't extend past parts of Arlington. And, lastly, DC has just about every cuisine in existence but you might have to dig a little deeper to find the same in Va, but most are there too - just more widespread. For future reference, digitalcity.com is a great resource. Just check the 'cities' best' list.
