Collars

Basenji Talk
  • First let me start by saying you have NO IDEA how HAPPY I am to finally find other Basenji owners. They are truley a VERY UNIQUE breed, and have unique quirks, needs, and ways about them.

ok, that said, my topic…Collars. I have yet to find one that is good enough. Tucker needs one that is WIDE, flat, no sharpness to the hole edges, and it MUST buckle (not snap or clip). So far, I've tried wide nylon, leather, and even padded. They ALL have rubbed the fur off the front side of his neck (above the chest). The skin is fine, no irritation at all, but the fur gets "worn off" for lack of a better term. I use a head harness when out in very distracting places, but I do NOT rely on it, so I need to find a collar that is suitable for daily use.

Has anyone experienced this w/ their dog? or have suggestions? Tucker is a mix, so he's larger than the average B... he weighs in at just under 50lbs. He's STRONG... solid muscle. although perfectly trained, he's still a B, and can yank me right off my feet if a squirrel goes by. so I need a strong, well made, wide, buckle, yet SOFT collar.

    TIA for any suggestions.

  • Have you considered a rolled leather collar?
{ http://www.dogclothes-apparel.com/sites/CollarsandLead-P/RolledLeather.html} They are rounded so they don't rub the hair off the neck; they buckle so there's no chance of coming undone;are strong, etc.

Or a martingale collar {http://www.pudelz.com/store/poodle_gear/martingale_collar/}, which are wide fabric, don't buckle, and hold great.

I've included the web addresses only for reference. I don't know anything about the specific businesses listed.

  • thanks for the ideas. I think the martingales are great training tools, but not suitable for everyday use (at least not for me). I may try the rolled leather if I can't find any wide/flat collars.

oh - should add that the white pine people have samoyeds and there is no bleed from the collars onto the white coats. and my bearded collie friends have them and swear there is less hair breakage.

Janneke, maybe they will ship one to you? I know that WWW won't deal directly with owners, but maybe some of the vendors/stores that carry them will be willing to ship to you? Wizard, they usually use those collars for whippets and other sighthounds because the head is very narrow and not much bigger than the neck. Collars easily slip off so they often use a martingale style. Also they make them extra wide so they don't cut into the dog, it makes it more comfortable since they tend to have longer thin delicate necks. They're not heavily muscled like other breeds. And if they pull like Basenjis, it's good to have a wider collar to spread the pressure out! :) Less likely to damage the trachea.

@Jarodkjv: Since someone is always home with the dogs a better choice may be the Playsafe collar, it is designed for daycare type settings. It won't open by itself but it has velcro tabs that can be pulled open easily even if the dogs are tangled up. The advantage would be that you could use it to hold them without worrying about it accidently opening. But it's not really designed to have a leash hooked to it so you would have to put a regular collar on them if you were going to take them out. That looks like a great alternative and I do think I'll give them a try. Although the dogs wear regular collars in the house, we always use martingales or sporn harnesses when we walk them. I found the website interesting and was fascinated by the dog cold weather gear. Don't need it here but it was still fascinating. On a side note, we found the cutest martingale collars on ebay. They are made by "ifitwags".

Is this Nick Russell of MastersPride? If so, we have a leather collar that does not slip down the neck and works well with them pulling. I put it high on the neck and Talker and Savannah will stop. But these collars that you posted the pixs looks really nice. Do you have the website?
