Basenji Talk
  • @tanza I did not know that. Tristan is such a hansom dog. Joy is beautiful. Great pictures on your site. Logan is Tri recessive. He was bred last November, but there were no Tris. Sparkle is Tri recessive also. Perhaps she might produce a Tri next year. The good news is that I don’t have make any of the complicated choices. I just get them where they need to be on time. Sometimes it’s good not being the boss. 👍

  • @jengosmonkey - All Tris are recessive. In order to get a Tri the recessive gene needs to be in both the sire & dam. Example Tri color to Tri Color will produce all Tri, Red that carries the Tri Gene to a Tri, either Red or Tri, Two Reds that carry the Tri gene either Red or Tri. My first Basenji bitch (back in 1994) was a red with tri recessive gene bred to a red with tri recessive gene, outcome of that litter was 3 red and 3 tri.

  • @tanza That works! I was hoping that the bitch Logan bred with might have been Tri recessive. I was rooting for a couple of tris. She had five. All red. I suppose it’s still possible to have all reds even if both parents are tri recessive?

Correct, what is Logan's registered name? If there are Tri's in the pedigree, he might carry the Tri gene. If one of his parents are Tri he would carry the Tri gene. And yes it is totally possible to have all reds even if they both carry the Tri gene. What is the bitches registered name?

  • @tanza Logan is Astarte’s Logan’s World. His momma Zayna, who is a Tri, so I know he carries the gene. I don’t know the bitches registered name. I try and stay out of it. Our female is Astarte’s Sparkle Perfect. Both our Basenjis show up on Zande’s site. It’s back a ways, but Sparkle has a Black & White and a Brindle in there as well as tris.

  • @jengosmonkey - As said you can only be sure of a Tri litter if you have Tri to Tri... otherwise it is just what happens with the genes... LOL

  • And although a black streak through the tail indicates the dog (or bitch) carries tri, its absence does not mean there is no tri gene.

I have had tris from a bitch with not a sign of black fur in her tail, and actually no tris anywhere near close up in her pedigree.

Whispering in their ears during pregnancy is no help either. Trouble was a lovely tri and we were so hoping for her to pass her color on in at least one son. So I kept nagging her - But no. Five red and white girls eventually emerged !

@tanza: Note the other thread on temperament. It was a known fact many years ago that Basenjis would bite first, ask questions later. I hear this from time to time and smile. My first Basenji that I had in 1966 had the best temperament of any of them. She was absolutely fine with anyone and everyone, loved children, was aloof but not snarky with adults, and I could take her anywhere. My Mom took her on a Humane Society tag day, lots of strangers patting her and when one picked her up she yodeled! If I disturbed her when she was sleeping, she would grumble, and if I picked her up when she was comfortable she would snarl…...sounded like a fire engine.....but she would never nip or bite. I have never known a Basenji that wouldn't snark if you disturb them when they are comfortable, but most of mine were all noise, no action. Like most breeds, there are good and bad. I think one reason people get the impression they are nasty is that most Basenjis will stand on their dignity and don't suffer personal disrespect gladly. You generally can't take liberties with one that doesn't know you.

Don't feel bad about getting bit…she probably was sorry as soon as she realized what happened. Darting movements can garner such a reaction from any animal (and some humans) when they aren't used to contact. Chasing a Basenji, even when you really need them to come to you (sometimes especially when you need them to come) quickly becomes a game and they will play tirelessly. You could try a training exercise wherein you have really good cookies in your hand and call her just to give her a cookie. It won't take long for her to come to her name if she associates it with something good. Don't give up.

My basenjis are very well known at my vet's office. Since we are in so much when we have a litter everyone in the office knows my dogs. When I call, I just give my dog's name and they know who they are talking to. I always know when there is a new vet tech when they dogn't know my dogs when I call. Everyone there loves my dogs. When we first started there we were the "good basenjis" now I think we must have set the standard for basenjis since we are now "the basenjis".
