I adopted from AllStar Basenji breeder.
Was extremely happy with my pup who is now 1 year old. Healthy, happy, easy to housebreak and good with kids -
@eeeefarm - I know this is late since the post was from 2020, but eeeefarm is correct if they are born with the gene to develop Fanconi then they are considered as Affected for Fanconi and because it is late onset, it may not show up for 5 to 10 years.

@shawna - I am happy to hear that you have a nice healthy pup from AllStar, happy to hear that you are happy with your pup. However, if you have not Please have the DNA test done for Fanconi and PRA. If the sire/dam of you pup was tested then the results are public knowledge at www.ofa.org, you just need to know the registration number or registration name of both the sire/dam to check this out. If not you really for your peace of mind to have it done. The cost is 65.00 per test and it is a cheek swab that you do yourself. You order the test, swab the cheek and send it in, they will send you the results. Both Fanconi and PRA are late onset (over typically the age of 5) PRA causes blindness and Fanconi affects the way the kidneys work and is not cureable. It can be controlled but it requires daily medication pills up to 24 per day. I always recommend that if you can't find the testing results on the OFA website that you do the test and don't just take someone's word that none of their dogs carry the affected gene. If you need assistance with the test you can contact me via email, link is on my website below.

All good!

@shawna - all good meaning they were DNA tested? Or that you are going to do it?

@keri-pini Have a look on my Basenji pedigree database (link is in my signature block).
I just did. Couldn't find a single Hill View in it. This MIGHT mean they have never shown, so I won't have found them on show superintendent websites,. It might mean they have never actually bred a litter yet so have slipped under the radar totally. Even I am not infallible
So I looked on the AKC website. Not a single Basenji Hill View there either.
I think you must draw your own conclusions !

@keri-pini New could also mean anything. People cashing in on short supply of puppies is something we are worried about in this country. New breeders with no experience.
@tanza is the best person to advise you but personally speaking, I'd prefer to go with a known reputable breeder of experience and integrity. Health tested dogs too !

I had a look at Hill View's website. Absolutely no information about their breeding, no sire or dam info, just that they had a litter of puppies in December. I suppose the options are you can email them or phone them, which might give some insight. Have your questions ready, i.e. sire and dam of litter, registration numbers, Fanconi status. What guarantees come with pups, how long have you been in Basenjis, are your dogs out there under another kennel name, etc.
-
@eeeefarm - Have never heard of this breeder and because they do not list sire/dam names (registered names) I would be concerned
-
@eeeefarm on the other hand, I wouldn't even pick up the phone. Too much cries out against even making contact
-
@zande said in reputable breeder?:
@eeeefarm on the other hand, I wouldn't even pick up the phone. Too much cries out against even making contact
Oh, I wouldn't either, but if a person wanted to find out more it would be the quickest way. Sometimes there is an explanation and things are not always what they seem on the surface. Benefit of the doubt and all that....

We purchased our basenji female from AllStarBasenjis from the 2019 litter as well. Our Cleo is amazing. Easily trained, loving, did great with puppy training classes is very healthy and Tammie has been nothing but helpful and caring through the whole
Process. Answers questions when asked and has provided documentation to me when asked in regards to testing etc. I would recommend them over and over again. If there ever comes a time for us to bring another basenji into our family I would absolutely go through her again.! -
Yes we know this breeder we bought dogs from her the first still alive at 12 years old.. but our black and white basenji died today from Fanconi.. hopefully no one else has to go through the pain and suffer that we went during the last three years.. Our dog died today at eight years old we are heartbroken please contact me if you need more info to verify I’m telling the sad true..

@shawna our was fine too until five years old Fanconi developed.. I’m heartbroken my dog died today after three years of extensive medical bills and care..

@debbie I am so sorry for your loss -
-
@debbie - So sorry for your loss. Especially these days when there is a DNA test for Fanconi meaning there is not reason to produce a Basenji with Fanconi. It is a horrible, deadly affliction.

@debbie So sorry for your loss. May fond memories comfort you and bring you peace. My deepest condolences. ️
