• Hi! I was wondering if anyone haf any good recommendations/info regarding tapeworm. She has been dewormed from the shelter and our vet twice for several parasites but was only hit once with a tapeworm med. I administered it last Mon but still seeing a large amount passing. My vet isnt the greatest as i'm looking for a new one. He didnt look at her stool long enough to agree with me today but i'm well aware of the fact that she has a heavy amount passing. Any OTC meds that anyone has used and knows works well let me know.
    Thank You!

  • As far as I know there is no over the counter for Tape.... or that works

  • There is...but some way more effective than others!

  • Look for one that is labelled as effective against tapeworms and contains either praziquantel, epsiprantel, or fenbendazole. I'm surprised your vet didn't sell you one. They usually make money on the drugs.

Out of curiosity, what are you seeing?

  • Tapeworms can be hard to get rid of. Most over the counters are more toxic and less effective. Tape worms may require more than one treatment, but you need a fecal retest to make sure they are gone, and you need to treat your yard unless you pick up the poop IMMEDIATELY.

  • @donc theyre rice sized white worms

  • Try Drontal to get rid of tapeworms. When I was living in the ACT, which has one of the worst infestation areas of tapeworms, we used Drontal on a regular basis. Tapeworms can be carried by fleas, and can be quite harmful. Get on to them quickly, and follow the label instructions.

Mine get Drontal every three months - only difficulty is getting them to take it. It is an older medication from before manufacturers gave heed to making remedies palatable to dogs. They smell it a mile off and refuse all food it is hidden in, however great a favourite it is.

I win in the end, of course !

  • @redial thank you!

  • One time I gave a med from the vet (where I always get tape med) when I saw tape segments in one of my dogs stool.
A half gallon size of tapeworm mass was vomited an hour later! It was the actual worms, not he segments coming out the other end. I'm assuming that's why, for the prior 3 days, she had seemed very uncomfortable when lying on the couch - she kept squirming around, when usually they fall asleep soundly, and don't move.

These worms were 1/2 - 3/4 inch wide. I know there are different kinds of tapes, this was obviously different than what I was used to.

  • @jalex - Drontal in the US is typically only available with a RX from the Vet.

You can get it from this website which only carries non-prescription meds.

There are other options with the same active ingredient.

They sound horrible ! Poor wee girl. But the medication seems to have been effective which is the important thing. Did that outsized vomit clear them completely or did you have to repeat the dose ?

I must admit, over here we really only have to guard against round worm for which I apply Advocate to the back of the neck once a month. The Drontal is just to be on the safe side.

  • @donc - Yes there are sites.... considered... I get my heartworm meds from Canada or Australia as I only want the heartworm med, not meds for other worms... not necessary. Just saying that in the US typically a RX from the Vet is required. I have purchased Drontal from Canada or Australia. Don't particularly trust way off brand that you can get in the US without a scrip

It was an awful gross surprise, and it did seem to clear up the problem FOR THAT TIME. I did a little research and learned that tapes gotten from fleas are different than those gotten from rabbits, so I bet these were the rabbit kind.

After that, whenever I knew of the dogs getting a rabbit, the vet would just give me tape medicine. (at least once a year)
That was gross too because that same girl had a rabbit head in her mouth and kept running away from me once. All I did was pray she wouldn't puncture the eyes!

Basenjis are gross, don't you just love them?

This site tells about the different kinds of tapes

Definitely not an expert but I believe Amazon sells Drontal from Bayer without a prescription. I know that you can get Merck Panacur from Amazon without a prescription because I've done that. No idea what the situation is or how the regulations work. Maybe the prescription meds add something which triggers the requirement?

I think meds are a significant revenue driver for vets. I'm fine with that, and most of the time I just get the meds from the vet. No doubt it's more expensive than Costco but it's also more convenient. This is why I'm surprised the OP is having trouble getting a prescription. Usually the meds are freely forthcoming.

This begs me to ask... aside from the "ewww, gross" factor, is there a reason you were concerned about potential eyeball puncturing?

  • @rugosa said in Tapeworm:

Rabbits are not good news. My Chezz broke a front tooth on one (and destroyed a load of hostas in the process). The Vet kept wanting to take the stub out but I refused because that could have ruined her dentition and I showed her. At least with the stub in place, the other teeth didn't close up to fill the gap and I could explain how she broke it when a judged queried it ! She was never penalised !

Squirrels now, something else again. I hate taking a squirrel from the jaws of a rapacious Basenji. Apparently bushy tails become just wire with fur through it ! Normally they are gone faster than I realise one has been caught. And the squirrel population (common greys) does need attention in this neck of the woods.

Since (in my experience) Basenjis always eat the head of a rabbit first, I'd love to know the answer to this one too !

It is now available OTC. Has been for a while. Drontal is for cats, Drontal Plus for dogs (Drontal Plus has meds for whipworms, which cats don't usually get.. ).

Your input is valuable. Thanks, because it's become a religion as soon as you speak against it people get so offended. The last 3 years has shown that quite clearly @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: Another friend's dog has a swollen leg at the vaccination site of his booster which is not resolving I"m sorry to hear about your friend's loss and understand the concern about the other friend's swollen leg. I had a similar experience, one of my dog's (not doodle) had a grossly swollen leg following a vet visit. The Vet told me it was cancer and I opted to let her go. Month's later I read online that it could have been the result of an allergic reaction. Please advise your friend to research possible answers before she makes a decision. Will do, a lot of the medication/vaccines cause inflammatory responses so it could just be that, it's still not nice for the dog to have that experience @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: dry food ... suffering from malnutrition omgosh! That is so scary!! I doubt the big manufacturers would ever allow a real study to see the light of day, but I would love to see one done. Just the thought makes me want to keep feeding my girl human grade foods. Yeah the same here, her research indicated that raw chicken wings were the optimal food and contain pretty much everything needed. I guess if you think of some of the processed crap they have in supermarkets trading as food for humans you can imagine how low the bar can go for pet food.

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

@mryltis Read this comment from @morgansc within this post dated May 30, 2019, 7:49 AM. It answers your question. Ideally it is best to wait until age 24 months but no early than 18 months. https://basenjiforums.com/post/177284
