Changing food

Basenji Talk
  • Hello! Looking to change Chupy's food from puppy food (we were doing blue buffalo dry puppy) to regular food now. Any suggestions in a brand? He is 10 mo now and I know I am way over due to upgrade to adult food.

  • I never ever feed puppy food, so I'm glad you are changing. Since he's on blue buffalo, and it's a good brand, why not switch to that? I actually rotate foods.

  • Same comments as Debra, I have never used puppy for any of my pups from the time they were old enough to eat solid food.... Don't particularly love Blue Buffalo, but any high quality kibble is fine. I use a number of different ones that way I can always change foods without any tummy upset.... I do like Fromm's Surf and Turf

  • I also use Fromm, grain free, I use a variety
Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Grain-Free Surf & Turf Formula Dry Dog Food
Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Grain-Free Pork & Peas Recipe Dry Dog Food
Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Grain-Free Salmon Tunalini Recipe Dry Dog Food
Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Pork & Applesauce Formula Dry Dog Food

I rotate with Blue Buffalo, Honest Kitchen, Taste of the Wild and Wellness.

  • Awesome! Thank y'all so much for the help!

Glad things are going so much better than you thought! Um, but can I borrow her to help with my mourning dove issue?

I'd leave him out for as long as he wants to be out in the snow - but not without a fence yard. As Tanza said, it only takes one car – or one annoyed neighbor -- to take him out, and he won't be adverse to taking on coyotes, so why risk it? Most people seemed to have huskies or malamutes when I grew up in Alaska and they were seldom indoors. They'd even curl up and go to sleep in the snow, while it was snowing, and remain under a blanket of the stuff!

Caesar started doing this around 4yrs old, or I started noticing it then….the chewing licking air after dinner for a while? I massage his jaw at the back and it loosens the food. He was officially ready for a teeth cleaning (big bucks) at age 5 and probably had that problem all of his life. Teeth were all fine. Now, after dinner, he comes to me to rub the back area of his jaw to get the food out. He must feel a real difference now that his teeth are clean. I dont ever stick my fingers inside his mouth, just rub the outside and it is good enough. I feed Caesar Innova Evo and Natural Balance Duck and Potato back and forth.

My Hollie girl eats from the bowl sometimes and sometimes she takes a few minutes to another room. She constantly "hides" her dogfood, in corners, under a doormat, under my bed pillows, etc. I don't know if this is something that all basenjis do, or if it is because she had been a stray when I adopted her. Either way, she is certainly entertaining.
