4 months puppy humping

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi everybody
My puppy, Benji, it's just 4 months old and sometimes, when he's particularly excited, usually after a walk/run outside, he tries to hump me. I tried to ignore him at first with no success, so I started "punishing" him by closing him alone in a room for 30 seconds/1minute maximum and I think this is working.
Is there anything else I could do? Is it a normal behavior at such a young age?

Sorry for my English, it's not my native language. I hope I've been clear.

  • Humping is not always about sex for dogs.
Gary Landsberg, DVM, a veterinary behaviorist in Ontario, Canada, says mounting is common play behavior in puppies, and is even normal in the play of older dogs if it’s not taken to extremes. “You’ll often see one dog mount another, then a few minutes later they’ll switch off and the other dog will mount the first dog,” Landsberg says. “It’s a common play gesture.”
My 12 year old spayed female will hump our neutered 3 year old male when they are playing together. If you don't like this behavior then you can distract him with a different toy or game. I'm not sure that he will understand why you gave him a time out. The behavior may lessen after he is neutered.

  • I don't think it's particularly unusual although I haven't had that problem with my male Basenjis, but I didn't raise them from pups, either. I would just gently dissuade him from the behaviour and redirect him to something else. Unless he is persistent that may be all you need to do.

  • A firm NO, and ignore him. While it isn't sexual all the time, it can be dominance. Regardless of intent, no one wants a dog humping them. So try to say NO before he actually starts to hump, then walk off. He can understand that humping gets him ignored. Putting him in time out he probably doesn't understand.

Work on commands. at this age he should know sit, down, and needs to work on "leave it." Giving him training will keep his mind busy and help him see you as not a humping item.

@jengosmonkey - NuHeart only does Heartworm, Heartguard Plus has meds for roundworms & hookworm. And people that give heartworm for 6 months are typically people that live in climates that have a cold winter, ie: when the ground freezes. We do not have that in this part of No. California so I give it year round.

@chewy1 Seeka is bathed regularly due her swimming and rolling in sand at the park daily, besides she sleeps in the bed with us. We put 1 tsp of Optima 365 in her dry food daily. Vet recommended. Takes care of her dandruff.

Yes, she's a wonderful lady. Always very helpful, and quick to reply to any concerns I have. If I thought it was an immediate problem I would have contacted her right away, but it sounds like a common phenomenon. Glad to have community feedback.

Glory has been with me almost two months - she is a little over 3 months old. I have switched her from a puppy food that was high in beef which she was eating when she came to us to a food that has chicken and vegetables. The soft stool doesn't bother her - there is never a sense of urgency to go - she only has a soft stool about twice maybe three times a day. She has gained almost 9 pounds since she came to us - she was very underweight and very young. Right now she weighs just under 16 pounds. We're doing stool testing every 2 weeks and except for the very first test, they are coming back O.K. I'm concerned that she may not be processing the nutrition from her food or that she will have chemical imbalances because of the loose stools. Am I worrying for nothing?

She still seeks out water but not to the degree that she was. As the accidents wane, I have been trying to leave the water out a bit more, but like one of the other members said about their husband, mine also is sick of cleaning up the pee so I have to find a happy medium between the two. All in all I think we are doing fine, and once again thanks for all of your concern. I will be sure to connect with the Basenji Forums again if there are any other questions.

Try giving him a half teaspoon of plain yogurt daily for a few days. Yogurt has enzymes that help adjust the "gut" and usually helps stop gas and/or diareah. Always works for my animals. :)
