4 months puppy humping

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi everybody
My puppy, Benji, it's just 4 months old and sometimes, when he's particularly excited, usually after a walk/run outside, he tries to hump me. I tried to ignore him at first with no success, so I started "punishing" him by closing him alone in a room for 30 seconds/1minute maximum and I think this is working.
Is there anything else I could do? Is it a normal behavior at such a young age?

Sorry for my English, it's not my native language. I hope I've been clear.

  • Humping is not always about sex for dogs.
Gary Landsberg, DVM, a veterinary behaviorist in Ontario, Canada, says mounting is common play behavior in puppies, and is even normal in the play of older dogs if it’s not taken to extremes. “You’ll often see one dog mount another, then a few minutes later they’ll switch off and the other dog will mount the first dog,” Landsberg says. “It’s a common play gesture.”
My 12 year old spayed female will hump our neutered 3 year old male when they are playing together. If you don't like this behavior then you can distract him with a different toy or game. I'm not sure that he will understand why you gave him a time out. The behavior may lessen after he is neutered.

  • I don't think it's particularly unusual although I haven't had that problem with my male Basenjis, but I didn't raise them from pups, either. I would just gently dissuade him from the behaviour and redirect him to something else. Unless he is persistent that may be all you need to do.

  • A firm NO, and ignore him. While it isn't sexual all the time, it can be dominance. Regardless of intent, no one wants a dog humping them. So try to say NO before he actually starts to hump, then walk off. He can understand that humping gets him ignored. Putting him in time out he probably doesn't understand.

Work on commands. at this age he should know sit, down, and needs to work on "leave it." Giving him training will keep his mind busy and help him see you as not a humping item.

@lawrence-chow said in Puppy dry heaving?: Replying late but our B had this problem for quite a while. It's called bilious vomiting syndrome. Usually the vomit is yellow foam in the morning when they have an empty stomach. Our vet suggested feeding 3 meals through the day with the last meal as late in the evening as possible and then the moment they wake up, feed them right away, even just a spoonful is good. Our B had this issue on and off for a good 4 months before it eventually going away, the feeding very first thing in the morning seemed to help. She's 9 months now and it still happens occassionally, the last time was when we forgot to feed her dinner the night before. She's otherwise totally healthy. Sadly this was a totally different issue at the time. It was dry and repetitive even post-feeding. Ended up being nothing which is odd but he's all good now :)

Pat.. you know I saw your post and thought HUH? Then reread and saw I TOTALLY missed the itching sentence. No, I'm not tired! :) Agree with Pat, could be fleas, could be other things. I'd flea comb the base and see if you find flea dirt, fleas, scabs etc. If the coat in general is good, and you find nothing combing and bathing doesn't help, rubbing a little anti-itch med into the base and distracting til it dries might help.

She still seeks out water but not to the degree that she was. As the accidents wane, I have been trying to leave the water out a bit more, but like one of the other members said about their husband, mine also is sick of cleaning up the pee so I have to find a happy medium between the two. All in all I think we are doing fine, and once again thanks for all of your concern. I will be sure to connect with the Basenji Forums again if there are any other questions.

Try giving him a half teaspoon of plain yogurt daily for a few days. Yogurt has enzymes that help adjust the "gut" and usually helps stop gas and/or diareah. Always works for my animals. :)
