Best Car Seat?

Basenji Talk
  • I know I am preparing way in advance, but like I said before our new addition will be here in late January/February :)

I was wondering what kind of car apparatuses you may use for your basenji?

  • I always had mine in a crate when in the car

  • A crate is probably best, particularly with a pup. I have used the harnesses that attach to seat belts, and with my most recent boy I used one of those "hammocks" that attach to the headrests. He had a crate phobia, but was happy in his hammock. As far as protection in a crash, I don't think anything is foolproof, and the aftermath of the accident will vary. You don't want a loose dog on the highway, but you don't want one trapped in a crate if the car goes into water or there is a fire. Not possible to guard against all eventualities, but for most a crate is likely best.

  • Traveling alone, I would go with the seatbelt harness thing. It gives your dog freedom to move around, but keeps him from hopping from seat to seat. My dog gets carsick, so we never take him anywhere without someone else to catch his throw up (he knows to barf in the barf bucket). He can last about a half hour on his medicine and then he gets antsy

  • Crate is best, in my opinion

Ah ok cool thanks, I had something like that when Safi was smaller and it was the most successful for sure. She outgrew it quite quickly though

I remembered that she gets car sick, so she will probably get bus sick too.

I tried a harness too but got too complicated to undo and my dog kept chewing it. Gave that up and she lies in a transport cage that takes all the back of my car. Had no choice after one seat belt has been dammaged as well as whatever was in the car!. When she is in her "car home", she just goes to sleep or sits up and looks at the road, cars and other things she would like to run after (the back of my car has a large rear window so, plenty to look at during a long journey). No room left in my car but a good solution for my Basenji, when I open the door of her "car home", she waits until I have put the leash on and then jumps out, well attached. If I take her with me in a friend's car, she sits on the back seat quietly BUT no way, can I leave her alone in that car, she would destroy everything and pee on the seats !(from past experience, not much fun for my friends)

Mine just sleep also. When I stop for gas, they awaken and we take them out to potty. Otherwise, no stops…. they sleep the whole time, really.

I put Tayda and Lenny in a kennel in the backseat…. they seem to be pretty happy with it. They wouldn't sit still in a carseat.... also helps with the hair all over the seat issue.
