Please make sure your Basenji is on flea, tick, and heart worm protection. With as much rain as we have had in many parts of the country, this could really have an effect on the number or ticks and fleas there are early in the season.
@zande - That is so true Zande, when you have a pack of bitches, the one "low" on the totem pole may be the last to come in heat in many cases... "want a be's" many times will come in first... depends on the pack.
@italeigha
I've tagged this pamphlet before so you may wish to search the forum for the link which may still work.
https://my.puppyculture.co.uk/resources/flipbook/spay-neuter-booklet
It's full of facts and studies and Liz McCargo uses it as her reference.
There's a free read-only version if you'd search: PUPPY CULTURE SPAY/NEUTER BOOKLET.
Title page attached, if allowed.

@yag113:
Exactly how I feel. Fortunately I love my vets, it's a husband and wife and they have come to know how I am and always work with me. I have 2 goats and the husband does farm calls. I feel very lucky. I always take the staff chocolates and snacks just in case I feel the need to get obnoxious about something…they will placate me!
Thanks again for the input. I adore my dog and it's very cool to talk to people who love basenjis!
Sounds like a great Vet practice!!! Let us know how the spay goes, I am sure she will do great!
@etzbseder:
While we're at this, when they are neutered, how long do you have to keep them from licking? Can they lick in 4 days? or do you have to wait like 7-8 or what?
Not till the incision is well on the way to be healed (which would mean the incision is closed..)…. 4 days is not long enough... IMO
