    This morning I was checking out the Modern Dog website and came across a local ad on my screen for canine first aid.

    Has anyone else taken a canine first aid course?

    This one sounds quite good - they even have 'dummy dogs' with working lungs and pulses.

    I think the Red Cross also offers a first aid class for pets. I have seen it in my area-Ohio.

    Yes, I have taken a pet first aid course, definitely worth it. I looked at the link from the place that you intend to participate with and it is very similar to what I did. The 8hour course is intense and very informative. Practicing on a 'dog dummy' was very helpful. Highly recommend to any professional and/or dog owner. The first aid you give before the trip to the Vet's office could be life saving! and knowing what to do in an emergency takes away the 'fear' and you can be more calm for the dog in need. I am due for renewal as a matter of fact!!!

    My Dog used a Litter Box until 12 Weeks of Age. After that, I took her to the Horse Farm and let her 'Pack' with older well-trained Dogs. She mimicked their behaviors and she learned how to Sit, Stay, Come when called and lay down. The Dogs did a great job of training mine. I did not have very many problems. these dogs get a bad reputation for being hard to train but they really aren't. They are very stubborn and would rather die than negotiate. Therein lies the importance of understanding the Dog's body language, that tells you all you need to know. They are extremely intelligent and never forget a thing, including people and other animals. Good luck with it!

    Yup, nothing fun happens until everybody's peed. Today she saw the old man go out on HER walk hour and was DISPLEASED. I agreed with her that it sure would be fun to go for a romp! I'm glad we're not the only dweebs who sing to our dogs. We've taken to improvising a life soundtrack to the tune of "Springtime for Hitler" that usually starts "____-time for Basenjis, ______". The past couple days it's been "Pottytime for basenjis, come on, go pee!" :D

    I think incorporating some crate training if none is being used will help. If you take him outside and he does not go potty, when you bring him back in, he must go in crate for about twenty minutes or so and not be allowed to roam or play. Then outside again to potty spot. If he does not go again repeat in crate for twenty minutes then out to potty spot and naturally praise like crazy when he does go. The idea is to get him to go potty when you want and where you want. I felt using the crate was extremely beneficial. Chris Battistelli

    quick note- I don't feed raw; i feed a grain free commercial dog food (there are now quite a few on the market) and have been very happy. I do feed some cooked muttloaf (http://www.maryshouse.us/Recipes.htm) with the evening meal.
