Logical, not "chicken little the sky is falling" thinking. Thanks DonC. I hate companies being gutted without evidence.

And I agree, if I had dogs - especially prone to the disorder -- on just grain-free, I might switch for added protection.

I emailed the person listed in the original post to find out if she wrote the first warning. She did write it- here is her reply:

But after eating the food…the 6 dogs here got sick, and two died within a week of each other. Different ages and breeds. After putting it out on the internet...3 more dogs have eaten the food and died. Many just got sick. So use your judgement. But the only thing in common seems to be Kirkland Lamb and rice with exp. 2013. We are waiting to hear results on testing...but that takes time. In the meantime...this food has been sold in Nov-Dec. 2011 and is on the shelves in our homes. So to save other lives...I would warn everyone you know that feeds it.

Luckily I'm in Cattle Country, too–I've got a bunch of leads to follow up. Two of my nieghbours have offered to let me graze a steer with their herd, but we don't have a big enough freezer! Most of the stock is non-registered organic, and I'm told many ranchers who raise for the farmer's market will sell heart, tongue & green tripe for a very good price--provided they're not keeping it for their own dogs!

@Debra, the Vet was mostly referring to fat and probiotics, and largely in the quality/freshness sense. But Non-medical diets (in Canada, anyway) may list their primary protein source as Duck, but are allowed a certain percentage of "off label" protein--I think it's 20, maybe 30%--and fat can be from ANY source. Duck has been my go-to protein source for years, even more so than fish...but who can afford prescription hypoallergic duck for multiple dogs?

As for probiotics, my previous vet wanted me to try a probiotic blend from Nestle, but the additives to make it taste good were pretty much abbatoir rendering sludge. With two sickly puppymill "babies" and an old "Nannydog" I'm at the stage where I'm afraid to feed them Human Grade meat for fear of making them worse...what a world we live in!

I had been giving them raw bones to chew, purchased from a local butcher, but then realized that every time I did that, Keoki got severe diarrhea for a day.
So…. I'm sticking with kibble and cans.

What really might be the problem is not the bones but the marrow, if you scrape out the marrow prior to giving them to your dogs then they should have no problems AT ALL with chewing on the raw bones and it will greatly help with cleaning their teeth and giving them something to do.

Good choices are like beef knuckle bones as there is very little marrow there (also can cut off excess meat too) and beef ribs are good too (again scrape out as much marrow as you can) the bone marrow is what can cause the looser stool not chewing on the bones themselves or anything to do with actual raw feeding. So go ahead and try it again, I'm sure Keoki would love having it again just takes a little prep she can have it 😃

And not only when it's empty- if he decides he wants fresh water, he'll knock water all over the kitchen floor.:mad:
