If I'm going to be gone from home for 5 hours or more. My dog Max (Basenji) goes into his cage (he's happy there it's not like the way humans think of a cage)
My question to all of you that have a Basenji. What is it like when you come home. -
If you mean how does my Basenji greet me, he's generally very casual about it. He is not crated, and much of the time he doesn't get up off the couch. Sometimes he will hop down and sniff me, but there is no drama. If I go away for a few days I might get a tail wag, but that is pretty much it. :) (believe me, with a former "separation anxiety" dog, this is a very good thing!)

My dogs always come to the door. =) Bowpi is silent, but she pins her ears back and wags her tail and sometimes does a little hopty-dance and spins little circles. The Shiba is the more vocal of the two… and then sometimes he gets so excited he turns to Bowpi and humps her. Ahh... dogs.

How many little circles does your Basenji spin before they end up in a perfect sleeping position. My Basenji always spins 3 times sometimes 5. It's been fun to count as he starts his spins, but also means he is going to sleep, and a happy Basenji is a sleepy one.

While it is nice to be "greeted" enthusiastically, anyone who has ever dealt with separation anxiety knows it's a good idea to keep homecomings low key. If you are matter of fact, the dog will be also. Too much fuss around departures and arrivals can have unintended consequences. Word to the wise…..

Back when I had my long-departed 5-pack, they greeted me with a 5 minute howl that was marvelous, and lots of tail wagging and swirling around me. Current 3 usually come to the door to greet me for pets and give me a few wags, but if they are really comfy on the sofa, they may just give me a nod. Greetings dropped in excitement level when I got a Prius : I sneak up on them, they don't hear me drive up so are not at the door when I open it, but Chipley always comes to say hello and I get an occasional barroo from him. No drama from anyone, though!
Occasionally I will be late coming home from work so Don takes them to the dog park. If I meet up with them there, they are very excited to see me, run over and twirl quite a bit, much more excitement than a home greeting, with Ed and Chip giving a barroo! I guess they consider me arriving at home normal, but seeing me arrive at the park is worthy of a greeting!

Whether we are gone fifteen minutes or 5 hours, Shaye runs to greet us and goes up on her two feet once or twice, bouncing around. Gemma comes to greet us but stays down, "talking" a little to let us know she is happy to see us. This is followed by them shadowing us to the counter to see if we are just putting down purses or shopping bags, or have anything for them. Once that's decided, they go back to whatever they were doing before we got back home, usually lying around.
