I Know Your Pottytrained but C'Mon!

Basenji Talk

  • Here is a story I wanted to share with everyone. While going through this I am not happy but now I can sit back and laugh

When we first brought Chance home a few months ago, we were determined to crate train him at night. About the first week into it we gave in. I lost my sanity. Working full time then going to school in the evenings, you sorta need your sleep and he kept me awake no matter what room we put him in and it didin't matter how much you shoved the ear plugs in your ears…they don't work.
Chance has learned to love the bed and he takes the WHOLE BED! Pushing my boyfriend to the corner and putting his butt in my face :o

It's taken sometime and now I can say that he is POTTY TRAINED!!!! He runs to the door and will even do a little dance to let us know its time :D
    EXCEPT FOR THIS ...
When our little guy gets excited he does a B-500 sprint throughout the entire house and runs and jumps onto the bed and digs and tuggs the pillows. Then he finds a corner (always on my side of the bed) and tinkles. Of course he sprints while he is doing this so I have a pee trail going down my comforter. No matter what I do he keeps doing this. Even if I take him outside to potty, if excited, he will tinkle on my bed.
We have even installed a 4 ft tall baby gate in our bedroom to keep him out and it works except for when he gets excited. He doesn't do this on the couch or even on the floor. Just My Bed!!!!!
    WHHHYYYYYYYYYYY??????

  • Gosh, it sounds like he might have a marking behavior going on. Is he neutered? I wish I had some advice for you, but, luckily, although I've only had male dogs throughout my life, I haven't experienced in-house marking. I'm sure someone will have some advice.

You've got my sympathy, that CAN'T be fun. :(

  • He won't be neutered until he is 1 year old. At first I thought it was just a "puppy thing" but now I am starting to wonder. I know he can hold his potty but why is it only my bed?

  • I think it's a puppy thing cause Abby does it to but not so much when she's excited, she just does it. like one night we were getting ready for bed and she pped on the bed and we had to change everything. she doesn't do it all the time, and she is potty trained she is ten months old this month. i think she does it to mark her space. now she did pee a little on the couch the other evening (thank god for leather) but i think that was cause she's in season and it was just a little. maybe it's just a B thing.

  • Dash did that too. So did our beagle. I really don't get it either. We started closing the door so they could not go in there when we weren't in there. We haven't had a problem since. He didn't do it when he was excited either, just when he had to go.

  • Sigh, I hate to say it but I'm in the club too. My B Stick, who is a year old now, has been known to pee on our bed. Just like you, he does it when he's really excited not because he has to go. It's been two months since he's last done it though…maybe they grow out of it? Let's cross our fingers and hope that's the case!

  • How old is stick? Abby still does it and she is ten months, maybe she will grow out of as well.

Ladybasenji, where are you in Quebec? Montreal? We have a place in Gatineau (Aylmer sector) and one of my dogs might even be related to yours. You're experiences with your girl remind me so much of my first basenji, about 20 years ago–it gets easier, I swear! Let me know if you'd like help with Lady--they're nothing like labs and will never be "obedient" but there are tricks for training them : D

@eeeefarm: The digital age has somewhat muddied the waters. Once upon a time you could buy a book or a DVD and when you were finished using it you could pass it on to your friends so that they could enjoy it (you still can!), and that isn't considered stealing. Make a copy for them to view, with the same exact result (they get to see the movie or read the book), and suddenly it is illegal. The law was drafted to prevent people from making numerous copies and selling them for profit, a clear infringement to copyright. For a person to make a copy for a friend to view rather than snail mailing the original seems to be in a "shades of grey" area. I'd be surprised if most on this forum haven't at some point downloaded something for personal use that would infringe copyright if the letter of the law was applied. You make a good point Shirley.. except that even 40 yrs ago you could tape or even xerox music/books to share, but it wasn't legal. The problem is that if a person LOANS you his movie, snail mail, it goes to one person only, and it goes back to the owner… you don't get to keep a copy. If you put on a server, many can copy it. Right now musicians are in terrible financial straits over people pretty much stealing their work instead of buying it. Some music programs (I am blanking on names) pay the artists a bit every time you listen to their music, thanks to advertising. That's great. But if I want to own a song on my own computer or to burn on a disk, call me a patsy-- but yes, I buy it. I believe people who create books, music, art... they have a right to get paid as much as your plumber, mechanic or grocer. I don't sneak into movie theaters either, btw, not even if I could do it and not be caught. Many digital books can be loaned, btw. I have borrowed a few and loaned many of mine through Amazon. You could, of course, just let someone borrow your e-reader or mp3 player, lol, but that's more generous than I want to be. I don't know what the solution will be years from now... I know that cable companies tried to block recording movies and that didn't go over so well. So I do agree there are certainly conflicting and gray areas. But a cavalier approach to stealing, justifying it because the owner is rich, etc... that bothers me. And it bothers me for someone to try to pretend it is legal or for educational etc. If you are going to do something, man up. :) Thanks for the calm voice. :)

I had nose surgery a few months ago and when I got home I was worried the dogs would be so excited and jump all on me, but it was crazy how mild mannered and dare I say tame/domesticated they were. I swear they knew I was hurt and gave me a day or so of good behavior. They are truly great dogs to own!
