Homemade food…

Basenji Feeding
  • I tried making Bella homemade dog food. I boiled chicken and put it, cooked carrots, green beans, and cooked white rice and a little of the chicken broth in the food processor and shreadded it all up. That's it, no seasonings or anything else… She devoured it!!! Our cat begged for some, but wouldn't eat it after I gave it to her (she doesn't know what's good for her). Oh well, more for Bella!:D
I mix it with her dry at her eve feeding. I use one pkg chicken, one can green beans (maybe a little less), a handful of baby carrots, and a serving of rice. It made enough for six meals. I put 3 meals worth in the fridge and 3 meals worth in the freezer!

  • I found a really good can food called, Blue Buffalo, it is homemade style. It is mostly meat and it has vegetables. One I get has Chicken and Sweet Potatoes, and other veggies in it. I occassionally give Sahara boiled chicken, or baked chicken, she loves it also. I don't have time to cook all the time so I only give her homecooked now and then. I use dry Blue Buffalo and mix it with a little can food. She eats this better than any other food I have given her. My vet told me this week that she is a perfect weight, 22.5 pds, and her coat was beautiful. Guess I am doing alright.

  • I was trying the Blue Buffalo since the recall (I mixed it with her Nutro) and it wasn't agreeing with her. She tolerated the dry better than the canned, though. The canned gave her loose bowels. And now, after the second day on the homemade food, the same is happening. She has a very, very sensitive stomach, I just don't know what to do since the recall. I was feeding the Nutro and had to go back to the dry, but I am afraid to give her the canned Nutro!

  • I'd skip the nutro - since it's on the recall list. I may sound like a broken record, as I've suggested this alot lately, but have you tried Merrick canned food? it really is like a homemade meal in a can (so much so that my fiance actually considered trying it out of the can!). you can see the meat, veggies, etc.. even has fruits in it too. Merrick also makes a very good quality dry food.

I agree with Jessi - I am impressed with the quality of Merrick's canned and dry food. The ingredients are everything people eat. I use Canidae dry kibble and once in a while feed 1/4 - 1/3 Merrick's can with the dry till the cans gone. I believe dry kibble assists with dental care better than wet food.

  • Unfortunately, the homemade food didn't settle well on Bella's stomach… I may try again and reduce the veggies.

  • We feed Rye Innova Evo. It's has no grains, low carbs, high protien and good ingredients. We give a dry/wet mix and feel its a good alternative because we can't afford nor have the time now for a raw diet. For anyone looking for dog food look at the first 5 ingredients. Look for meats like chicken, turkey, salmon not anything that reads by-product, meat meal, fish meal, etc. That can be the leftover's to put it nicely. For raw diet look at this: http://www.newworldbasenjis.net/Dinner%20Time.htm

  • I have now switched from Blue Buffalo food to Merricks wet and dry. The Blue Buffalo was hard to get, I had to buy it out of town. I get Merricks locally, and Sahara absoutely eats it better than all the rest. She is a picky eater and doesn't have a big appetite, but man oh man is she waiting when it is meal time now. She cleans her dish, a new thing for her. I am very happy, I use the dry also with about 1/4 cup of wet mixed in. I add alittle warm water to the dry (it makes it's own gravy) heat the wet alittle and add to the dry. Yes, I know Sahara is spoiled b/c I heat her wet food but what the heck, she is worth it, only takes a few seconds. Merricks is pricey $2 per can but I make it last for about 4-5 meals. Anyways, if you read the can and bag of the dry you will see what I mean, it is very good dog food and the family that has the company has been in business for 3 decades.

I once had a pup under treatment at the Bristol Veterinary hospital. When they finally sorted the problem I was told now you'll be able to give him real food meaning kibble!1 I always feed raw and whatever but never complete dog food. Having said that it seems that over here we get a new dog food manufactutrer every month and all claim that theirs is the best!!

@Patty: Interesting that you had a problem with loose stools, Pat, because I had exactly the same but with a puppy who was eventually discovered to have Giardia. It did take us a very long time though and in the meantime the pup was suffering. It also happened to a friend of mine herself who for years had a stomach problem that finally was discovered to be a Giardia infection. Because of my experience with the puppy, I had jokingly suggested the problem to her as well. Yes… Giardia "hides" very well..... Many Vets will write it off to a sensitive digestive system when in fact it is not. Like I said with my OJ, once it was cleared up, he could eat anything...

Kananga approves. :D Local pet store that I go to carries all of the frozen raw diets offered by Nature's Variety. It's nice to have a good selection to possibly rotate proteins. I thawed out 3 medallions and it only took Kananga 20-30 seconds to realize this was yummy food. He's a big fan of this but hopefully he'll still like his dry kibble. :)

I give it to dogs who don't eat…or to hide pills in. But not as a regular thing.
