I tried to watch it last night but there was something else on the channel! I always wonder why there aren't any Amarh Narh dogs winning at the show…...

Don't think I remember them being entered, at least not in the last few years. Can't win if you don't enter.

Such a small number of basenjis… why? Is the entry fee huge? Do dogs need a certain number of points or wins at other shows to qualify? Sorry to ask what must seem as rather dumb questions, but I have never really understood how this show works.

They have to be finished Champions and the entries (total) are limited so the 2000 able to entry, all breeds can be filled within 5 minutes of the entries being opened… NO JOKE....

  • So I just watched the Westminster hound group, and while I have no clue about confirmation and showing I have to wonder… How much is it really dependent on the judges bias? I just can't see the breed that won to have been the best representative of the hound group...IMHO
The reason I ask is bc I noticed the judge smile when the particular dog was up but before she even touched him, I thought to myself , "hmm, that's funny" and sure enough that dog won...hmmm

  • did you see it on the westminster website??

  • I just watched it on tv, it was on at 8 on the east coast…. Oakley loves watching all the dogs, he's glued to the tv

  • ohh. ok… I don't have cable so i have to wait till they upload them on the website.. Saw the basenji breed highlights....

  • There were some very nice looking dogs…. Oakley loved it, but I thought last years hound group was better. There were two new breeds in the group so that was interesting....I just hate how you can tell the jugeds favorites early on.... Always makes me wonder "was that dog really better than the rest?" if find it hard to compare a dashound to a Rhodesian... If both met the standard what takes it over the edge for the judge?

I just find it kind of humorous…she is campaigning dogs in Canada yet I hardly see anything in the US.

All dogs are supposed to be compared to 'their' breed standard. They are competing against a set of written rules as to how they should look, move, etc. It seems that it is not fair for them to compete against others that are so different than the others, especially in the hound group where they are so diverse. But the closer they are to breed standard should give them an edge.

  • But do all judges see or look for the same edge is my question… What are the chances two judges judged the same group and picked the same dog... Ideally, the answer is they should but IMHO I think it's luck and dependent on the judge barring any major faults (which likely those dogs wouldnt make it to the group showing.) Just my take on the process

  • Well, before you go dissing Jennie and her dogs, Gabe has been winning in the US. G CH The Lost Angel Gabriel just went BIS at AKC shows in Midland, Tx. He just won Williamette Valley Basenji Fanciers Specialty at the Portland ROSE Cluster on Jan 18. Ch. ( AKC, CKC,) Africanadian Zen at Ahmahr Nahr finished his CXKC title at Credit valley and his AKC title at Tucson. Both Halle (she is being shown in Canada right now)and Gabe finished their FCI International titles in Guatemala.

So, say what you will, like her or not, she does show in the US and she also shows worldwide. Zen, Halle and Gabe are all eligible for CRUFTS this year. And by the way Gabe is only two and Halle is 7 months. I think she's quite pretty.

  • Well I missed the hound group showing (didn't get home soon enough) but caught most of the rest. It was interesting to see some new breeds, one of which was pulled for the final choices (but didn't win). My question is, why is the italian greyhound in the toy group and not the hound group?

    Arlene,
All I said was that they usually don't enter Westminster. The last one I remember them entering was RM Holt's Tri that Jennie co-owns, but then he was absent. And if you don't enter, you can't win… made no comment on her dogs.

Each judge judges the dog on the day. Each judge might have a preference on one breed or the other. Many times a "breeder/Judge" is harder conformation/type wise on a breed that they have been involved with. And no, I disagree that two judges, same day, same group would pick the same dog… depends on how the judges interpert the Breed Standard, as they are judging the dogs against the written Breed Standard, not against each other in regards to conformation. However in the ring depending on the day, some dogs just stand out more then others... and have a look "pick ME!".....

I thought that wire Doxie was lovely and that she deserved the group win.

I thought that the Basenji also showed wonderful.

  • I wasn't replying to you. It just seemed to be starting to go that way (not by you again Pat) and I just wanted a clarification on where Jennie does show. Let's face it, Jennie has the money to do what she wants, where she wants. Like her or hate her, she does show her dogs worldwide. Most people don't know where she shows because she doesn't show in one spot, but I hear about it because of the newsletter. I welcome Jennie's wins because this DOES promote our breed.

That said, I wish more of us had big money to do what Jennie does. (at least for me!)

I was just wondering why I don't see her big winners entered in the bigger shows in the US. I have had the pleasure of meeting Jennie numerous events. Her handler (Larry) and I get along quite wonderfully. Money can be thrown around quite frivolously to send dogs where ever and get multiple championchips. If every breeder had that option some of the lesser known MBIS basenjis would be quite famous maybe more-so than hers.

  • @wizard:

Well I missed the hound group showing (didn't get home soon enough) but caught most of the rest.

In past years, the show has always been rerun the next morning. I didn't look to see if it was this year, but would assume so.

Does anyone know what happened just after the Best in Show judge was introduced and while they were introducing the other two gentlemen? Someone ran down the steps and was quickly grabbed and escorted out, but it all happened so quickly that I didn't really see what was going on.

I must say that I was really disappointed with the final result. Out of all those beautiful dogs, the judge picked the Pekingese?? Yea, yea, I know…the dog that most closely conforms to that breed's standards should be the winner, but really....

  • I have to agree, I thought the Dal was lovely…. but then I have never been a Pek Fan.......
