At the emergency vet

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • It reduces stomach acid.

  • Very good news about Oakley. I'm so pleased he's well enough to come home.

  • Prilosec is sold over the counter-also sold as a generic and it reduces stomach acid. My boy Bowie is on this and he gets 1/4 tablet once a day. He takes it for his esophagus and spitting up problem.

  • I hope to hear Oakley got to come home tonight and that he is doing better.

And I second what Agile said about the relaxation protocol. It sounds somewhat clinical but really it is a nice way to teach your dog a default "relax" and that he doesn't need to worry about all the stuff going on around him.

  • Oakley is home! His liver values have improved enough and he is doing well. He is still under the weather and not quite himself. He was quite anxious while in the hospital and he hasn't loosened up yet, he is being very "stiff" with touch, which isn't like him. He came home to a new, smaller crate and toys since we will be going back to basics with crate training. It's great to have him home as he has been labeled " naughty" at the vet hospitals… I don't think they found his basenji antics as funny as I do at home.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I bought a DAP an am looking into the thundershirt as well as doing some crate games and reading up on behavior modifications

  • Glad to hear he is home! I would go easy on the changes, as he has been stressed enough without having to adjust to a lot of difference at home as well…...

  • Glad to hear he is home….. I have used pepcid for years on all my elder basenjis.... especially the ones with any kidney issues. Our Tego was just diagnosed with ulcers (he will be 15 in December) and is on pepcid. A little cheaper then Prilosec. And as noted it is sold over the counter, so depending on what your Vet is charging, you can get it most likely cheaper.

  • There is also a generic version of Prilosec.

  • @Nemo:

There is also a generic version of Prilosec.

Omeprazole. It has other brand names as well. e.g. GastroGuard paste for horses.

  • Sorry to hear that Oakley went though this, but I have to say thanks for posting about this. I use Xylitol for my own baking/sweetening while I'm dieting… looks like I'll only keep the Stevia in the house... in the highest cupboad!

One of mine scoots and licks when she needs expressing, but she rarely leaks/"splooges". My male, however, may scoot or lick, but I tend to do his at least every one to two months because he is prone to expressing them when he gets scared or startled – much like a skunk. I'd rather express his anal glands than deal with the "squirt" mess.

I live in the east suburbs of Pittsburgh. I take my B to Norwin Veterinary Associates. Ask for Dr. Harvey Bendix, if he is available. He diagnosed Senji with his liver disease and basically saved his life. He's open to alternative as well as traditional medicine.

@Benkura: His brother is my other boy 'Cahnce' who is Clear. It's just Chance & Trouper are chalk and cheese and both have good to offer the breed. I did wonder whether neutering him would be beneficial or not. Wasn't sure if it might induce too much stress. However, I would have to stop showing him if I did that and he already has 1 CC. I would not worry about doing it now… only something to consider "IF" he starts showing symptoms.... When Jaadii came down with Fanconi it was before the DNA test was available, so no one knew until he started spilling sugar. He was fine 11 months out of the year, but during Basenji breeding season he was a mess... and that was a lot of stress on him... So being neutered was not stressful, it was NOT being neutered that was. That said, not all dogs are alike... each are different... just putting in what we found with Jaadii....

When I took my puppy to my vet, he said he had little knowledge of the Basenji, but he would start reading up on them. Since that time, he's thanked me for the opportunity, and says he is learning more all the time - at our last visit for final puppy shots he said he felt he was becoming quite an expert - if you come across a vet who doesn't have a lot of knowledge about them, he could quite easily love the challenge and become great on the Basenji issues. I told him I'd sent for the DNA marker kit and had Shaye tested (thank God, it was clear), and he launched into a really good discussion about the symptoms, illness, etc., and said he was glad I'd done that, but maybe in a while we would do some blood work to be sure of everything. I feel very confident with him now - so, a good vet with a love to be challenged can be an answer too.

Info sent from BCOA: Improved Methodology For FANCONI LINKAGE Tests: FTA Paper / Saliva Option A new process has been implemented for ordering Fanconi tests that uses saliva rather than blood for sample collection using FTA paper. Dr Johnson may still request blood for some research projects, but in many cases, the FTA paper will satisfy that requirement. The new procedure will also allow you to check the status of your test request online with use of a conformation code that will be emailed to you when the order is placed. You can now order a test on the internet and pay by credit card. The price the kit and test will be $65 to cover the cost of the kit and mailing. The test can be ordered from one of two websites: 1- The The Canine Phenome Project website From the dogs profile page in this site, click Fanconi Test. This will link you directly to the OFA site to order the test kit. 2- The OFA site. [[url]www.offa.org] Go to the "OFA DNA Testing" link on the OFA website The test kit will allow the use of saliva applied to a special paper card that can then be returned to the lab. The special paper (FTA paper) will supply enough DNA samples for over twenty tests so when the direct marker is found, no further DNA collection will be required. Adding the dog to the Canine Phenome site is still required before results will be sent, but the ordering the test kit is a separate entry at this point. The kit consists of the FTA card Foam swab to collect the saliva Instructions Labels for mailing to the University of Missouri Any tests in progress from the previous procedure will be completed. The OFA and the University of Missouri have entered into a cooperative agreement to offer this new procedure. Thank you!
