Questions regarding neutering

    Otis was right over a year when he got neutered..now he did end up having aggression issues (resource guarding), those started around his 10 month mark, at the same time as we moved Moses in..I don't personally think he would have been different around us if he had gotten neutered sooner, he just did not mesh well with other strong dogs or young children for that matter..but it wasn't hormonal I don't think..he is thriving in his new childless only pet home now though..

    My new vet for Pippin aand my other dogs, saw Pippin for the first time a week ago and once she saw his umbilical hernia..wanted to pretty much schedule a neutering session as soon as he hit 6 months…I was shocked..told her no way..he will be shown and umbilical hernias are quite common in the breed..she didn't know and took for granted that all dogs with hernias should be fixed as it is hereditary....hhhmmpf..just goes to show that even though we have vets..we should keep our head in the game and research on our own as well, don't automatically trust what the vet says, they don't know it all, especially not with more unusual breeds like ours..now a labrador I bet she would know inside and out..we are in "hunting TX" after all.

    We got our first two basenjis in tx and had a good vet in copperas cove. I did get Keishas imbilical hernia fixed young and showed her too

    The thing is, you need a vet that knows what they are doing to examine the umbilical hernia and make sure it is properly tied off. Sometimes they DO need immediate repair, other times can wait til you spay.

    I did have one bitch, Mickii, that I had to have the hernia fixed, but it ruptured due to puppies from Maggii's litter trying to nurse off it….:eek:

    She was 1 1/2 yrs old at the time... had it repaired, continued to show her, course her and she had a litter at 3yrs.

    My Maggii, Fatia, Kristii and OJ (boy dog) all had hernia's of varying sizes and we never had a problem with any of them. When it came time to
    spay/neuter they were fixed at that time and that was at varying ages too.

    About Otis.... I would say that his problems started way sooner then 10 months and the arrival of Moses.... Just that many times they are such little changes that we totally miss the cues until it becomes a big problem.. and also breeding/temperament comes into play also.

    Tanza, you are right about Otis' temperament and since his questionable breeding and upbringing is to a large part unknown to me….more than likely he was showing cues I didn't know about...good thing is he is better now.

    I've come to this thread pretty late and all the advice has been given but I would like to say Fran that I think you've come to the right decison to wait a while until growth is complete.

    There are many myths about neutering that are accepted even by vets. I've seen neutering at 6 months reccommended as routine.

    My boyfriend and I got our Basenji in February, and he's 9 months now. We did our research, used positive reinforcement training, crated him at night until he was potty trained and then let him sleep in the bed with us, and we had extensive play sessions with him in the mornings and walked him until he (or we!) got tired in the afternoon/evening. He's crated for a few hours during the day when both of us are at work; we live in a small apartment with no room for an x-pen, and are considering doing some test runs with leaving him free in the apartment, because he hasn't been destructive the few times that he has escaped his crate. Result: he sticks to us like glue. Though we rarely get to let him off-leash anywhere, he likes to keep us in sight and keeps a watchful eye on strangers who come near us both in and out of the house. We still have playtime with him in the morning (anywhere between 30 mins and 1 and a half hours of fetch, tug-o-war, chasing, and the Basenji500), and we try our hardest to give him a good long walk before we go to bed. He's okay with the crate, though he doesn't hang out in it of his own free will, but he tolerates it for when we're gone. His most destructive times are in the morning when he wakes up before us and decides to see if we were silly enough to leave any clothing or paper in his reach to shred up (we've lost money, a deck of cards, shoes, underwear, shirts, bookbags, etc.), and in the afternoon when one or both of us happens to be home but not paying attention to him, so he starts tugging on drapes, bedding, even the carpet - but more to get our attention than actually ruin anything. It's work, but Paco makes it worth it in the end with cuddles, doggy-smiles, and never-ending enthusiasm!

    No I haven't and I need to… I have taken some great ones of her lounging in the sunshine. She loves taking in those rays....

    @Jylly18: THanks everyone for the advice, she ended up being fine, I fed her this morning and no throw-up when we got home :) I was just worried cause she has never done it more than once before. Its funny about how you said you put her over the toilet, my husband managed to hold her over the garbage when she threw up, so she looked ridiculous but at least it made no mess! HaHaHa! That conjures up a picture!

    Sanitized bone should be fine… however like you said, these days I would not trust the "goo"... .... especially now that they have found that for many of the foods that "claimed" they didn't have rice, wheat, corn as the protein source, they really did.... or on the package it was listed as "protein source" that turned to be one of the above glutens...

    On tv this morning they showed some dogs that were to be adopted at Petsmart from the Humane Society. One of them they said was a basenji/terrier mix. That dog was huge and he didn't look anything like a basenji to me. No batwing ears but the tail was curled.
