Another "Does Anyone Know this Breeder?"

    I saw an ad from someone in Cypress, TX for CKC B pups. The area code was 713 which is a Houston area code. I do not know if the ad was current though. This breeder may be Mary Alaniz. Is anyone familiar with her? Her ad has CKC as her affiliation!

    How did CKC Bs get so popular and why would anyone want to buy a pup if they are not health tested at least for Fanconi?

    The OH Amish breeders also have/had CKC registered Bs.

    I bought my pup from Mary Alaniz. She said his parents had been tested. He will be a year old in 5 days. So far no health problems. She was very nice and told me if I have any questions or need advice to contact her. I researched the breed and breeders for over a year before I bought one. I think if the dogs are well bred (in terms of genetics) and are healthy that it is oK if they are not AKC registered, especially if you are not interested in showing and are going to have them fixed anyways. Also, her dogs are pets to her, not just a dollar sign, she seems to really care about them, they live in her house, unlike some breeders who keep dogs in kennels.

    Good to hear. I bought my Basenji from her a couple years back as well. I got the runt of that litter (the last one left) but she's doing just fine.

    It seems that 1990 and 1991 were good years. I got my first show Basenji in 1991 also. :) The breeder that I got my foundation bitch from lived in another state and wasn't interested in continued contact after I bought the dog. I didn't know anyone else who even owned Basenjis. (This was before internet.) Only one couple I met at dog shows took the time to even speak to me when I first started showing. They gave me tips on handling and grooming but they did not serve as mentor. I did not have a mentor for my first litter but it turned out well; five puppies of which 3 became conformation champions and 1 became a field champion. My mentor came about later. We disagreed on many things over the years but I learned a lot from her. Now it's my turn to be a mentor. I didn't really know what I was doing early on but I really enjoy it now.

    I will do the Fanconi test, for my own peace of mind. When my Lucy died, it was so unexpected that I wonder if she had it; I got her from a young gal that bred her two basenjis, so I never knew her pedigree. I was surprised to see the AKC Registration numbers for both of Halo's parents, knowing that she came from a mill, and I went on AKCs web site to validate that the number is valid. I am also impressed that the basenji website even had little Halo recognized as a dog…. how did she do that? :)

    There is no documented cases of blue or cream Basenjis having alopecia. That said, while these people do DNA test for Fanconi now they do no other health testing and the exact lineage of their dogs cannot be traced. These people are not bad people per se but they are not very knowledgable about the breed. They do breed multiple breeds solely for profit.

    AWW MAN! lol i wish I could have a basenji play date! lol Anyone know of anyone in Mitchell, SD? Would love to have a Basenji play date with anyone living here, or even passing through with their B's. :)

    Yes, Arlene, you do need at some point to take a stand and trust what you see and what you like… Breeding comes down to that in the end.... And with a bitch that is only 1 1/2 yrs looking down from the top is not a very good judge... IMO... reason?... They are not mature yet... and they shouldn't be.... their ribs have not even "sprung" at this age.. again IMO.... I would be hard pushed to say a dog is "wider" in the front then the rear at this age by just looking down on them.... again IMO.... Here is a link to 3 pictures of Kobey, 6wks, 3 months and 5 1/2 months... everything I saw on this pup at 6 wks that I liked (and that is a bit early then the 8 wks usually used for evaluating pups) I still see... but there are differences while growing... Now granted this pup is one of the few that has yet to really fall apart with a growing spurt...     @khanis: Not polished ??? Sorry, but that is one of the silliest things that I have heard in ages. **I'm sorry; to what is this referring? :confused: I have seen dogs that are uglier than sin.. in the show ring no less! People that can't breed a decent looking domestic basenji aren't going to be able to breed a decent looking African basenji! **Uglier than sin? Really? I really prefer health and temperament and function as breeding goals. IMHO. How is that for a bunch of African beauties??? **Your dogs are quite lovely. So are my two Jasiri-Sukari B's. But neither would win in a show. We think they're beautiful, too. And they both have sweet temperaments. Lucky us. :) s.
