Being from Europe I am amazed at how trivial a lot of people see their pets here. They get them because they are cute and adorable, not necessairly planning for the upcoming kids in the future, or pending move that might happen etc, etc..
In Sweden (maybe the remainder of Europe is different, but I don't think it is) people get a pet and it becomes a family member, it goes anywhere you go, just look at Janneke and Tillo going to the Zoo (hope you don't mind me using you as an example, Janneke..;) ), if you are invited to friends house for dinner or go on vacation, the dog, cat, heck even the gerbile goes along..that is not how people see their dogs (or pets in general) here. I have numerous friends with one, two or even three dogs, that have never seen the inside of their homes, because they live in the backyard..why have a dog, shoot, why have several if you don't pay attention to them. Some of these dogs didn't even get to go inside during hurricane IKE..because they don't come inside..ever. Shoot, we even evacuated with our 7 just-started-laying-eggs-the-week-of-IKE chickens, they were very cozy in our jumbo Vari-kennel.
I have gotten into several heated discussions about this with my family and friends and they all say I am weird, I love my dogs more than I love my children and so on..shame on them for saying that..I do not love my dogs more then my children, but I love them almost as much..clearly it is too much for some. I signed myself up to love these pets of ours, the minute I got them..why is that so hard to stick to?
It kills me to see these shelters and how full they are, it will never end..
My parents when they came over many years ago, when I first moved here from Sweden in -91, wanted me to take them to Houston SPCA..Why I asked them and they simply answered, because they have never heard of a place that takes in pets nobody wants..why does people not want their pets, they where dumbfounded..

I think maybe we need to move to Sweden, that is the way we think of our dogs. And your rant is very justified…...
The two in Texas are so pretty and I do so hope they can stay together. Your right basenjimamma people get rid of the dogs/animals there is something wrongwith them.
I love my dogs and I love my kids but I had dogs a really long time before I ever had my kids. My dogs are my babies and someday my children will be grown and gone and it will be back to my dogs right were I started out. Your are so right in all that you have said.

I wish the attitude was better here, too. In GA people dump there unwanted dogs along the side of the road - purebred, mutts, mixes, it doesn't matter.
I have friends in GA who have rescue kennels full of senior dogs that no one wants and they love the throw-aways.
One of my friends collects puppies from all over north GA, has them vetted, owns a van built and equipped to transport to NJ and north, and takes the trip alone at least once a month - all this is out of her pocket.
She inherited and sold some very prime real estate in the mountains. She and her hubby spend their money on rescue work.
Pretty super and kind people to travel and do what they do. I wish that people would stop getting dogs and then just treat them like trash or what ever. Makes me want to treat them as they have done the dogs. Maybe someday this will stop.

Basenjimamma- I agree with the others, don't apologize.
This summer we have been talking about evacuation plans in case of strong hurricanes and what to do with our dogs. There are very few hurricane shelters that allow pets, and none in our immediate area. I think there is one co-shelter, but humans and pets are kept in different areas. They advise people to take their pets to kennels, vet offices, and the like. Our boys hate storms, so I don't feel comfortable leaving them alone in an unfamiliar place. Most of the hotels only allow small animals. I think that's another thing that shows the general feeling of people and their pets. I would never leave Cody and Moe alone in a storm, much less outside like some pet owners do. I wouldn't evacuate without them. They are as much a part of my family as my brother.

I understand you so well and what is heartbreaking is that so many dogs are abandoned during the summer holidays. There are hardly any holiday places that accept dogs in Europe and I find myself not going out to restaurants or hotels because of the "dogs not allowed" syndrome. Friends don't understand this, but I always insist on taking my Basenji with me everywhere or…I don't go! I have to put up with other people's children, so they have to put up with my dog, as simple as that....AND....she is silent!

Yes Petra, I was thinking the same thing yesterday about the zoo. We have sadly become very materialistic here. Do you know how full the shelters are here in CA because people have to leave their over valued/ over mortgaged house and they have just dumped the family dog off at the shelter because now they're too broke. Some people here in Sacramento/Stockton,CA have just left the dog in the yard, yep left the dog in the yard and packed up their stuff and took off from their foreclosed home. The poor pets are found starving! :mad:

You see these are the same people that lied on their home loans app to get the house saying they made a lot more than they did. They have no conscious! That's why they can sleep at night knowing they left their pet behind abandon. It was just part of the house/yard anyway. Right?:mad:

Lots of people lied to get into a big house. Now the big house is worth lots less. Our house is not big and its not fancy but its home and ours. We have a home our animals have there home.
My husband has a saying you can live for a house or a house can live for you.

I contacted my superv, about this. I will let you know if I find anything out. If I read the add right they are already in a basenji rescue type shelter so Brat might not be able to get them.

Thank you! We've been lucky. Our house is sturdy and has weathered over 50 years of huricanes, so unless it's a very strong storm, we usually don't evacuate. I will definitely keep your offer in mind though.
Just found out from my Brat coords, that this rescue/shelter is not friendly towards brat, so we will not be able to help the two dogs. Lets just hope the shelter does their share and interview candidates thoroughly before adopting them out. The dogs looks like they were adopted at one point from brat..
