Sent off Swab…

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I just had visions of Maya biting the spongy bit off it - she kills all of her toys and shreds them to pieces so i wouldnt put it past her at all :D And she can be a wriggler, she hates bath time, or any grooming time and its so hard to keep a wriggly basenji still lol So i was very pleased with her! I think she thought i was brushing her teeth :D

Fingers crossed though, being from two clear parents i hope she does come back clear but i know its not guaranteed so will be keeping everything crossed for the next few weeks!

  • Went great Jess!!!

    Waiting is the hardest part

  • Good luck Jess, I hope all goes well. I am glad to hear that she did not bite the end off!

  • Yes the wait is the hard part. Good luck. OFA rec'd Jaycee's on 14th July and sheet says it was done on 23rd July and I rec'd it on 29th of July. I live close enough that it only takes one day travel time. Yesterday I had just checked the website and nothing our mail came so I got up and got the mail and there is was.

    Rita Jean

  • Congrats that is off in the mail. Otis was Ok with the swab as well, I did it right as he woke up..the waiting is the worst part. I received my info in the mail and I think it said on ofa's website that it will be a week or two after that when the results will be online..in case they spelled something wrong so it can be caught before everybody else sees it. Good Luck Maya and Jess, it will be here before you know it..

  • I've sent it by a faster post than normal so it should get there by monday as, although it says the sample is fine being posted, i dont want it to take too long :D

How can you find out when they have recieved it?

Its complicated (for me at least!!) but better for the dogs than a blood test i suppose. Maya is such a princess she'd probably make a terrible fuss about a blood test, not that i blame her as i have a major phobia of them :D

Now, just gotta sit and wait and keep out fingers and paws crossed for the next few weeks!

  • We took seven dogs for blood test when we did it! I wish we could have had the swabs then! It cost us ?65.00 just to send it but at least we could track it!

The only way you will know that they have received it is if you e mail or ring them I would imagine (I am only guessing)

I look forward to you receiving your prob clear result in a few weeks time!

  • In about a weeks time you can check the status of your order. There is a 10 digit code at the bottom of your order. Go to OFA and DNA tests, enter your email addy and code.

My last set of results came back in less than 3 weeks.

  • My results came back in 3 weeks. I'd actually kind of forgotten about them as I was expecting them to take a bit longer (allowing for postal systems etc).

    Good luck. x

  • good luck Jess. I sent Milo's swab off just a week ago so i'm also waiting impatiently :-)

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

@elbrant said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: divisive I guess I'm a dreamer.... but I believe that adults can have discussions and opinions without resorting to name calling and rude remarks. Your input is valuable. Thanks, because it's become a religion as soon as you speak against it people get so offended. The last 3 years has shown that quite clearly @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: Another friend's dog has a swollen leg at the vaccination site of his booster which is not resolving I"m sorry to hear about your friend's loss and understand the concern about the other friend's swollen leg. I had a similar experience, one of my dog's (not doodle) had a grossly swollen leg following a vet visit. The Vet told me it was cancer and I opted to let her go. Month's later I read online that it could have been the result of an allergic reaction. Please advise your friend to research possible answers before she makes a decision. Will do, a lot of the medication/vaccines cause inflammatory responses so it could just be that, it's still not nice for the dog to have that experience @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: dry food ... suffering from malnutrition omgosh! That is so scary!! I doubt the big manufacturers would ever allow a real study to see the light of day, but I would love to see one done. Just the thought makes me want to keep feeding my girl human grade foods. Yeah the same here, her research indicated that raw chicken wings were the optimal food and contain pretty much everything needed. I guess if you think of some of the processed crap they have in supermarkets trading as food for humans you can imagine how low the bar can go for pet food.

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

@mryltis Read this comment from @morgansc within this post dated May 30, 2019, 7:49 AM. It answers your question. Ideally it is best to wait until age 24 months but no early than 18 months. https://basenjiforums.com/post/177284

I am hopeful this will be a test every basenji owner does. It gives you information so, if needed, you can be prepared. Knowledge is power and keeping our dogs with us as long as we can is the thing we should all strive for. I am so happy to live in this time. Who knows, maybe in the next 10 yrs, fanconis will be like rickets…we just don't see them.
