Saw a basenji mix today…

Basenji Talk
  • … and it wasn't a good sighting for me and my dh. :(

We were at a light (intersection) where a highway crosses a medium-busy street. Near the highway is a grassy area where we always see bunnies. But today we saw a dog (border collie/basenji?) running around like crazy chasing the bunnies near the culvert at the highway. There are few houses around there, so I have no idea where the dog came from, but maybe it somehow maked its way to the bunny area using the culvert to get to the other side of the highway. We were 3 lanes over from the side of the road, and traffic was moving too fast for me to stop our van, get out, and try to rescue the dog. I was just shaking, because all this dog had on its mind were the bunnies. You could tell it was totally zoned out regarding the danger of the area it was in. When we got home, about 5 minutes later, I called the SPCA. We aren't allowed on cell phones on the streets.

I've called to check on if the dog was rescued, and they said that no dog was found in the area. Oh how I hope someone in a lane closer to the culvert rescued it.

I don't think I would normally write anyone about this. But there has been some posts regarding basenjis off leash. I'm even still shaken and having trouble composing this post, so forgive me (the english). Please, everyone, be careful with your loved basenjis and other dogs. What a horrible sight this was to see.

@Nemo: how weird. Nemo tried to eat off his martingale collar today. He only wears it when his leash is on. Luckily it is still usable. Glad to hear Roo is well. Thanks Nemo, We strongly suspect that the Vet or Vet Tech loosened his collar when they took it off before his Neuter. When the Vet Tech put his collar back on him, they neglected to check it for proper fit and we never thought about the possiblity that hit had been loosed, so we did not bother checking the fit. We bought Roo a new Red Martingale Collar the other day and I made sure it properly adjusted. I can just get about 2 fingers inside it. It does not hang down where the leash connects so we do not see anyway he can get any part of the collar in his mouth or lower Jaw. We have been watching him the last few days and we now believe it is a non-issue. What we did learn is that when we do take him to the Vet, we need to make sure his collar is properly adjusted when we pick him up. I am sure we would be much safer taking his collar off when we are home, but from what I see if the Martingale Collar is adjusted properly it's no longer a problem or concern. So we will chalk this experience up to owner error. Most likely it was mine for overlooking and not checking the collar after we picked Roo up from the Vet. Jason

This is all too funny!:) When we got Metinga (our 1st B) 5yrs ago, we used to get stopped quite a lot with ppl asking "what kind of dog is she, she's very pretty". One day I had a man at the dog park ask me "is she a Dingo", I said no close relative though. Now a days I have found more ppl recognize the breed here in Calgary. They still ask but more now say "what beautiful Basenjis". As far as other Bs go, I have met a few more ppl w/Bs here in Calgary. Helix and Metinga had there first try at lure coursing a month ago. We met a lady that had 2 female Bs and they live 5min away from us,….who'd a thought! Apparently there are others that attend practice but were not out that day. One Sunday I went to our annual Dog Jog for the Humane Society and this couple came running up to me and said "we saw your 2 Bs and just had to come meet you!" They have a 3yr old, red/white male (who is a lot smaller than Helix). There has actually been quite a few Bs that we have seen and met out at the dog park we go to. One couple we met bought a 4mth old, red/white female from Petland Pet Store. I was both surprised and horrified all at the same time. They told me a local breeder was selling them to Petland! Another couple that we see out there has a little black/white female about 6-7mths old. A few years back before we got Helix, we met a lady out there that had an older female, red/white. Her B- Rosie, has since died. Had also seen a big male brindle, but have never seen him since. All in all though, the number of Bs in Calgary is still quite low- about 6-12 or so. Rhonda- Helix and Metang's mom:)
