Surgery- will NOT leave stiches alone!

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi everyone :)
We just had our six month old trindle neutered a week ago and he will not stop licking the stiches. We don't think he will adapt well to the cone, (we will do it if we have to, ) and are looking for creative ideas. As of now, we have a nonstick pad and some athletic tape under a 36 month old onesie with a hole cut for his tale :) he isn't a big fan to say the least! However, it seems to be helping the wound scab up at least. Does anyone have any tricks?
    Thanks,
    Holly

  • I dab tea tree oil near the spot, not ON it, and the smell keeps mine from licking whatever they are after. My dogs all hate the smell. You may have to re-apply every few hours. The incision is probably at that itchy-healing stage. Good luck!

  • thanks for the help!

  • A Bite Not collar. There is another thread on how to make one yourself. The look sort of like a neck brace and make it so the dog can't turn its neck to lick at the incision.

  • @MacPack:

    Worked for my B. :D

  • After a surgery for my boy I bought some shorts for him to wear to keep from biting his stitches. The shorts are something that would ordinarily be used for incontinence. They worked great, although I think he was a little embarrassed to wear them. They were denim and I told him he looked cool with them on (he never believed me). :)

  • i can only imagine what he looks like. picture please. ;)

  • Shaye is being spayed tomorrow and having her little hernia taken care of. Good to know, MacPack, about the tea tree oil thing. I will certainly try it if/when she starts wanting to go after the stitches.

  • Being prepared with something like an E-Collar, Bite Collar, or homemade collar "BEFORE" they come home from surgery is a good idea too…. Then you are not running around trying to decided what to do....

A quick Google search suggested that diarrhea isn't unexpected with either of these drugs. Could the leakage be a result of the combination of the drugs? Rimadyl ... potential side effects, which can range from mild to serious.... Diarrhea The most common side effect of Flagyl (aka metronidazole) is diarrhea... I don't know how long the drugs will stay in his system, but I'm leaning towards the idea that he would return to normal once the drugs dissipate. I am also (curious) why your DVM didn't think about the side effects of the medication(s) as possible contributing factors and jumped straight into another procedure. (Doggie diapers are always an option until the issue is resolved.) I agree with elbrant the side effects from the drugs are likely causing the fecal leaking. As the human, I had to be on a long course of Flagyl having contracted Amoebic Dysentery in Nepal. Believe me, I was never far from a bathroom while taking this drug.

LOL at the Dobbie. Cara is a rescue, horrific breeding for sure from a hoarder/puppymill. The ears are gigantic and I thought they would NEVER be erect, but they are. When she is stressed, she still drops her ears and does the dobbie look.

@cahootz I have made my own in the past.... there used to be pictured on the old Forum, I can't find them now. I got a stair tread (hard rubber) and cut it to fit from just behind the ears to the point of the chest. Wrapped it in a towel, duck tape it all up. Wrap around the neck and secure with Vet Wrap. Worked great, also I would put Tea Tree Oil around the stitches (not on).....

Basenji's are related to goats, aren't they? Rubber?! Crazy, they just eat anything that they are not suppose to. Glad to hear that Lenny is okay and will be home.
