Longtime member, not active. Had a basenji with the same diagnosis back in 2004. He took a tremendous amount of bicarb each day, his Fanconi was being well managed, but he started having seizures at night. Our vet gave us something to stop the seizure that we'd administer rectally. We kept track of the number of seizures and they started becoming more frequent, to about twice a week, if I recall. The final seizure he had he went temporarily blind and howled and howled and we knew that was it was time. I just sat on the floor with him and cried. A couple months later we looked at photos we had taken of him right before and he looked very, very tired. Very much the hardest thing we had ever done was to let him go across the Bridge, but after looking at those photos, we had done the right thing. Our vet had told us that it was possible he would have a seizure and not come out of it, and we certainly didn't want that.
My Fanconi Results
-
Just had the results back.
Chance is Clear!!!!
Nakura is Carrier!!!
I'm gutted that Nakura is a carrier, especially for her breeder, but I know now that I will need to make an extra effort to find her an extra special 'clear' boyfriend.
Nakura is Chance's mother so I'm extra delighted that he is clear.

Great news for Chance, sorry about Nakura. I assume that if her boyfriend is clear any Pups would be as well?
Still trying to get my head around all this Fanconi buisiness. -
The sire's not tested and not likely to get tested. But he could either be clear or a carrier. I've just arranged to get Trouper (Chance's brother) tested too so that would give a better indication of what the sire is.
Now I've just got to find a good Clear dog to use at stud on Nakura. -
Thanks Vicky. At least Nakura hasn't got the disease herself.
-
Congrats on finally getting the news. I am sorry to hear about Nakura, but at least she is not affected. Good for Chance.

Still trying to get my head around all this Fanconi buisiness.carrier x clear = 50% carrier 50% clear
clear x clear = 100% clear
affected x affected = 100% affected
affected x clear = 100% carrier
affected x carrier = 50 % affected 50 % carrier
carrier x carrier = 50% carrier 25 % affected 25 % cleartheoritically ofcourse in a clear x carrier mating in practice can give you all carriers or all clears, but with these % you know your chances

Thanks for the info ibi n sane

Brilliant news, fingers crossed for Trouper now!

That's good news about Chance Vicky. At least you know you have to find a nice clear boy for Nakura now. You must be relieved.

Chance is Nakura's son so can't use him! The search continues. We need to encourage more people to test are there are only about 6 clear stud dogs in UK at moment. So not much too choose from there!!
