Basenji Harness/Collar size

    My husband and I just bought a Basenji puppy from a breeder that we're going to name Akila (meaning beautiful and intelligent). We have owned a couple other dog breeds West Highland White Terrier and Australian Sheppard but haven't owned a Basenji. We have done our research on the breed and visited the breeder and found our perfect puppy! We'll be picking her up in a few weeks but until then we're getting everything ready for her. I know Basenji's adult weight range can be anywhere from 20-26 lbs but I dont know what size collar and harness to buy for her. What size collar and harness would you suggest for a Basenji? Also what kind of food do you prefer for your Basenji's? I was thinking about trying Blue Buffalo Puppy or Orijen Puppy (Although Orijen is hard to find at the pet store). Maybe someone could help me. Thank you:)

    Find out what food she is eating now and get some of that first, if you need to transition her to something else do it gradually as diahreah is a common side effect of changing too quickly. We have used Innova, Evo, Canidae and now use Taste of the Wild as the first 3 were too high protein for our whippets and gave them bad diahreah. I recommend an adjustable martingale as she will grow quickly from about a 6 inch to up to a 12 inch collar. Harnesses do not work all that well as they can back out of those too.
    Hopefully your breeder has shown you proof of a fanconi test on the puppy, if not I would insist on seeing one or run in the other direction. All reputable breeders test.

    If you don't mind sharing, who are you getting your puppy from?

    And as far as food there are a number of good ones out there… even if you have to order it to be delivered. But good pet stores (not usually petco and/or PetsSmart) will order it for you. I have been trying Fromm Puppy Gold and really like it.

    A martingale is a good option, many basenjis are very gifted at slipping a collar or harness. Congratulations in advance!

    I would defintely recommend martingale collars, specifically the Lupine brand ones..they are fairly inexpensive and have a 100% guarantee, meaning if your dogs eats/chews or in any way breaks it they will replace, no questions asked..we have used that policy once, when Otis decided to eat his…..
    As far as food..I have used Blue Buffalo, and like it lots, especially since it is easier to find. I also like EVO, Canidae and The Honest Kitchen..My dogs are on RAW so we use the Honest Kitchen or Sojos for mix ins, even when they were puppies.

    Good luck and how exciting..did you mention where you got her? A lot of our dogs are related so it is always fun to know.

    So I've not given up on this. I went back to rainshinefoundation.org.au and researched it a bit. It looks legitimate to me, and I'm really skeptical. This isn't an endorsement. They claim they are funneling the majority of donations back to the people they are providing assistance to. I could get behind this. Is a Basenji Hunting Bell worth $300 USD? In my best Texas accent, "Hell Yeah!" If they really are sinking the percentage of money they receive back into direct support as they claim on their website... it's hard NOT to get behind that. I'm still trying to verify that. Feel free to chime in. Coconut is too big. Western Buckeye is too thin. If the above is legit... I don't want to compete. I don't want to make something that mimics those from Africa. If it's legit... I'd rather support the cause and spend the $300 USD. So mine have to look different. They have to resonate sound. Which wood? CNC engraving? Laser engraving? Slots? Collar? Clasp? How do I support Basenjis? Tooling is going to cost a bit. I think I have have the bell figured out. I may also have the clappers figured out too, but I need to test all of this. The part that concerns me is the collar. Weaving, macramé, braiding, sewing... Anyway... these are thoughts in motion...

    They vary in size. I had dreams of a nice 18 pound bitch. My bitch won her championship, svelt, at a good 25 pounds. Her niece, our 2nd basenji, was this hard muscled machine and she topped 27 pounds at her best. (Sadly steroids from 4 yrs til death made her usually closer to 32 pounds.) I was at a show about 18 yrs ago and saw some part African basenjis that looked even bigger. But the European and US standards for size are almost identical (1 pound heavier for females in US). As for the show ring sizes difference, someone who shows internationally can answer. I just know from rescue that most that I see tend to be bigger, not smaller, than standard. The FCI (European) Standard: SIZE AND WEIGHT : Ideal height : dogs 43 cm (17 ins) at withers, bitches 40 cm (16 ins) at withers. Ideal weight : dogs 11 kg (24 lbs), bitches 9 1/2 kg (21 lbs). AKC Basenji: Height: 17 inches (male 16 inches (female) Weight: 24 pounds (male) 22 pounds (female)

    My boy is a real escape artist, and I mean real - Julius K9, loads that people have recommended as being for 'Houdini dogs'. He also chews through leashes, including a beautiful, very expensive leather and brass….which he neatly chewed into 8 inch lengths when I was foolish enough to leave it below 6 feet up....the only thing I trust my boy to be tethered in is his current harness - a Ruffwear Webmaster. For walking, yes, a martingale (and oddly enough, Butu has never worked the trick when slack), but I'd definitely not trust him tethered. I'd get him one of these, and probably a chain and trust him in an open stall where he can see you and you can chat....I'd make the chain long enough that he could stand in the entrance, but could go inside the stall if he wants a sleep, drink, food from his bowls....do not let him near tack, horses feeding stuff, horse's anything - and I'd be cautious about hay too.... Chealsie508 - have you tried these (Ruffwear Webmaster?) If this hadn't worked I was going for a Ruffwear Doubleback, which costs a serious amount of money (but when I think of the number of useless harnesses I've bought..) but is the nearest thing I've seen to a doggie straitjacket - it's used by those people who drag labradors rock climbing.... http://www.ruffwear.co.uk/dog-gear/harnesses/doubleback-harness

    I used to hike frequently with mine, and considered getting them backpacks so they could haul some of their own water. However, when I did research, the recommendation was not to give them more than 10% of their weight to carry, which would be less than 2 lbs each for my girls. I decided I could carry that 3.5 pounds of water myself quite easily. So I don't have any recommendations, but if all he is carrying is mail, I think any of them would be fine.
