Ruff Wear Basenji Harness… tried it??

Basenji Talk
  • I've been searching for a good harness for my basenji Decker for bike rides(and as a carseat restraint)…... seems much more wise to bike ride with a harness then a collar. I think I've found my harness which is the ruff wear webmaster harness (www.ruffwear.com)). I like how the weight is distributed if lifting is needed but also for seatbelt purposes. However I never like to "jump the gun" so I wanted to get some opinions from everyone before I purchased it…. but mainly if anyone has tried this ruff wear webmaster harness for their basenji???.

    Update:
AFTER WAITING FOR RUFF WEAR'S NEW 2008 RELEASE OF THEIR WEBMASTER HARNESS I FINALLY HAVE IT….. CHECK IT OUT BELOW.
This has to be the best harness on the market. If you have any questions.... please dont be shy and ask.

  • I love it! I actually use their packs but the webmaster harness is the base for the packs. My boxer does have the straight harness as well as the pack. Tiggy (my basenji) did great in this harness and the handle is a great added benefit. I find also that my dogs are more comfortable in this harness than any other when worn for even all day

  • Thanks for the feedback….. I got a reply from the company about an hour ago telling me that they are coming out with a redesigned/re-engineered webmaster harness on April 01. Keep an eye out for it incase you feel like upgrading. I'm sure/hope it'll perform just as good if not better.

  • Great heads up info, thank you

  • Do they really not ship outside of the states? I'm kinda interested in several items, but I'm in Canada…
    and there's nothing on ebay!

If you click on their store finder, and then click on the map, the new window that opens has a tab for stores in canada that sells ruff wear products.

And here's the link for online sales http://www.gear4dogs.com/

  • The harness has all ready proved itself far and beyond my expectations.

  • Thanks for that site, I may order the cooling jacket for my black basenji, he gets really hot and that might let us walk all of them in the summer(before dark). Your harness looks really great.

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

I don't like harnesses. I read something recently that putting them on too young a puppy can do nasty things to their shoulder formation as they grow. MUCH better to use a Gentle Leader as a training tool or as @eeeefarm suggests, a martingale collar. That way you control the head of your dog and can train it properly.

I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

I would defintely recommend martingale collars, specifically the Lupine brand ones..they are fairly inexpensive and have a 100% guarantee, meaning if your dogs eats/chews or in any way breaks it they will replace, no questions asked..we have used that policy once, when Otis decided to eat his….. As far as food..I have used Blue Buffalo, and like it lots, especially since it is easier to find. I also like EVO, Canidae and The Honest Kitchen..My dogs are on RAW so we use the Honest Kitchen or Sojos for mix ins, even when they were puppies. Good luck and how exciting..did you mention where you got her? A lot of our dogs are related so it is always fun to know.

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!
