I think she was hot…!!

Basenji Talk
  • For those not in the UK, its pretty hot here at the moment! Its 27 celcius here today. Maybe not that hot for some parts of the world, but for here, we're just not used to it :p

Anyway, Maya must have been really hot this afternoon as when i went home at lunchtime and let her and my two pugs into the garden she got straight into the fish pond!! It has a ledge about 1ft deep of water (sloping kinda, you know?) and she just got on that and led down! The pugs followed her in and paddled around in it too

Its so odd as she really hates water normally. She wont even walk in puddles and looks at me like im the cruelest mum EVER when i give her a bath  She must have been a hot dog… or just trying to catch the Koi :p

  • Too bad you didn't get pictures. Mine weren't too keen on water either but when we went to the beach on a hot day they get in the water to cool off.

  • Yeah i have no camera or i'd have run to grab it :D lol

I've yet to take Maya to the beach, i just cant imagine she'd get in the water with all the others, but maybe if it was hot enough she would!

  • Wow!!! And that's relatively cool for those of us in desert county. Here the highs are over 37 and Medjai is just now letting me put water on him. He doesn't like it, but if gets him cooler and cleaner after running around at the park.

    Michael,
Best and fastest way to cool them off is stand them in water so the bottom of their feet are covered…

  • Maya must have been hot, i love this weather but our big dog Max doesn't cope well in the heat and pants constantly. This afternoon we filled the plastic bath my husband uses for work with cold water, max climbed in and sunk down with a contented groan. However when i went in and returned with the camera he climbed out.
Talking of the beach when i first took my basenj Benji i dont think he knew what the sea was because he saw a Seagull floating on top of the water and immediatelyran into the sea, quite a way out. I was very surprised and so was he, it was like a cartoon when the character runs off a cliff and only notices when they are in mid
air.Needless to say he never did it again and avoided puddles for the rest of his life,
    Shelley

  • Wow, that is so funny. Otis has been walking around in the puddles the kids make with trheir pool but that is just aabout all of it. We are going to the beach later in the summer so I am looking forward to see if he will get in the water there..

@jengosmonkey - Correct depending on his conformation... it that and movement met the standard then yes.... years ago a friend had a black & white Male that was about 30lbs and was about 19 to 20" tall... he finished his championship. Chances of the "Neuticles" being discovered most likely would have happened, however. It had been tried in other breeds.... one was with a Golden that only had 1 testicle so they had one neuticle implanted when the pup was about 8 months... funny thing about testicles... sometimes can come down at the most inopportune times... image the judge when did his exam and discovered "3" testicles....LOL Opps! by the way the dog and the owner & handler were DQ.

@Kingsley1230: Thanks for all the input guys! I will definitely get Lilu trained before I bring in a new B. But in the mean time I will be looking for a place to adopt an adult B, I heard eldorado is great. Is this correct? I have 2 Eldorado basenjis and also their male that they imported from Finland. 2 I adopted as adult show dogs retirees. I couldn't be happier with my basenjis. They have wonderful termperaments and Eldorado is big on health testing. The sisters are super helpful and always willing to answer my silly questions. :D

She looks very sweet, whatever her parentage. We had a lab for 12 years. Sweet mild-mannered dog, a little needy and shed year-round. But great off leash, unlike the curlytails. Labs do tend to be mouthy and need something to chew on more than many breeds, but if she's older (older than 3) she may be beyond that. Either way, good luck with your new friend. Does she have a name yet?
