Question

  • Don't dogs mature at different rates? Depending on the blood lines?

  • Yes. Check out "Mirtillo 16.6 mos" just posted today. At 5 months he looked all grown up, but at 7 months Tillo was tall and skinny, then much more filled out at 10 months. Finally a fully matured dog at 16 months.

  • @Forever:

Curious, its been so long since I have had a dog. How old before they reach full size. Zoe is 5 months now I think she is around 14 lbs maybe a little more. At least I haven't had anyone ask me if she is a chihuahua lately.

Typically between 6 and 9 months… height is usually when their growth plates close (in the ankle of the front legs)... and that is usually someplace between 6 and 8 months they have their full height... they do mature body for up to 2 yrs.... but usually their height is done early on.

Sounds to me like she will be to the small size...

  • I just had Liyah at the vet for her rabies shot. She is 5 months old on Tuesday and she weighed 14lbs.

For reference, visually, Liyah looks to be only a couple inches shorter than my girl Ruby who is 16.5 inches - I haven't measured Liyah's height. Ruby who is 4yo weighed 18.2 lbs today…lighter than usual. Ruby is really lean and usually weighs around 19 - 19.5 lbs. Liyah, has her running so I'm sure that is why her weight is lower! :D

  • I guess Bella is going to be a big girl. At 5 months she weighs 19lbs (and isn't fat).

  • My Noel is 5.5 months and she weighs 20.5. She is tall and very thin. To the point where her ribs show when she walks, although she eats plenty. does this sound normal?

Some are just built that way… tall and narrow framed.. and sometimes it can take up to years for them to fill in... or she just might stay pretty much tall and narrow ..... if she is eating well, I would not worry about it...

  • Thanks Tanza.

  • Also have you posted a picture of her recently?

  • No I haven't and I need to… I have taken some great ones of her lounging in the sunshine. She loves taking in those rays....

@saralars: This is off the subject of crate escape… I was told growing up that turkey and chicken bones were very dangerous for dogs. Are Basenjis different in this way too? Or am I missing something... Raw, uncooked bones are fine for any dog, not just Basenjis… it is "cooked" bones that are the problems

Home is a dog's "territory" and sometimes they will protect it as such (especially against other dogs)… Possibly the breeder is concerned this would be an issue. Maybe she would consider meeting somewhere "neutral" with you and some of the dogs...

I was surprised by how thick the whiskers were! She was finally a bit sleepy and left the scissors (I tried a small nail scissors this time) so I got the annoying one trimmed, but I was surprised at how the scissors barely got through it! Oh well, its dumb but at least now there isn't this annoying long hair hanging way down off her chin :)

@Jylly18: THanks everyone for the advice, she ended up being fine, I fed her this morning and no throw-up when we got home :) I was just worried cause she has never done it more than once before. Its funny about how you said you put her over the toilet, my husband managed to hold her over the garbage when she threw up, so she looked ridiculous but at least it made no mess! HaHaHa! That conjures up a picture!

Sanitized bone should be fine… however like you said, these days I would not trust the "goo"... .... especially now that they have found that for many of the foods that "claimed" they didn't have rice, wheat, corn as the protein source, they really did.... or on the package it was listed as "protein source" that turned to be one of the above glutens...
