Need new crate

    I have a small travel type crate that I put Noel in while we are away from home and at night. she is 14 weeks. She is really getting to big for this. What types of crates do you keep your B's in? I am looking at a medium size cage type kennel. 30L x 19W x 21H inches
    I want to be sure she has plenty of room to lay down in it. What is your advice?

    I have a Large wire crate from Walmart. About big enough for a lab to be comfortable. I divide it up into two peices (1) open one, (2) Enclosed in blankets like a little back room. We used the divider when Indy was younger but he seems to enjoy the added space

    i got a crate big enough 4 a large dog. like a lab or something simular. I had 2 get the travel crate because in a wire crate she would pull things into the crate and eat it. comforters rugs you name it. She even ate her bed. fluff everywhere.

    @sanjibasenji - Well it would depend on where you stop to eat and of course the weather. It it is hot or cold out that is not comfortable for your Basenji. I prefer to keep an eye on the in the car/suv/RV. All depends on when you stop and the location.... Mine have always been crated when traveling...

    @rugosa LOL on the pig ear. But it's not just a basenji trait. One night it was storming and one of my rotts was fixated on one of the bedroom windows. I looked, there was a toad on the screen! The dog was so intense about wanting to get to it, my daughter went out in the rain and moved it from the window. From then until she died, day or night, I had to let her in the bedroom when it stormed to make sure the once-in-a-lifetime visitor wasn't there. They think more than many people give them credit for.

She is darling, she definitely looks very basenji. But if you really have doubts, contact basenji rescue and let them find her a home while she's still a puppy. Frankly, I suspect you are letting BASENJI close your vision. They have quirks, but overall no better or worse than most breeds. All dogs take patience and that you be at least as persistent as they are. At her age, she doesn't get the option of "won't allow me to do anything." Without yelling, hitting or rough behavior, you really can turn it all around. Right now is the time she must learn you can check her teeth, look between her toes, check her ears, etc. At some point in life, it may be critical, so training her NOW is important. But it can also be relationship building and fun. :) Mary has one of the easiest to follow sites. You just start working on training so that she comes to see you as the one to guide her.     Interestingly enough, there has recently been a discussion about crates on the CleanRun list. CR is working on obtaining some high end crates to sell. Everything CR sells is tested by the CR staff. I am not sure how they are going to crash test these crates, but I am anxious to see them. I have a feeling they may be the solid metal (Al?) crates I've seen that are VERY expensive, but we'll seel I have used Kennel Aire crates in my van for years. Why Kennel Aire? http://www.newworldbasenjis.net/kennelaire.htm I also like that the KA crates have one inch squares. That makes it harder to suck things into the crate. @tanza: The problem being the Basenji that chews through the seat belt harness in 30seconds or less. So hence the muzzle Yep, I happen to know for a fact that one of the most expensive things on a 73 VW bug is the seatbelt! For those having problems with getting your dog in a crate, I believe Susan Garrett's Crate Games talks about that. I think it's at the end of the dvd.

    thanks heaps, now that i think about it wire would be best, i agree it would probably only last a day

    Indy has a "Large" size wire crate from walmart. We decked it out with a king size comforter, two fleece blankets, and a life size "puppy" stuffed animal. Then we throw in a deer antler and two of his favorite stuffed toys and tell him to have at it. So far no problems. The other cool thing about this crate is that dh made him a "deck" ontop. We put the kennel next to the couch so he can climb up the top and onto the deck. He hangs out there and looks out the window all day long sometimes. When he was younger we put the divider in, but once he showed us that he knew pottying in his crate was not ok we just let him have all the room. So far so good.
