  • Okay, I'm trying to get used to this! I think I sent the photos to the wrong place, so I'll try again. Sorry :)

    Here's jack, my Basenji-mix boy…

    Cheers,

  • Very cute, looks more like a Shepard mix then Basenji to me…

  • Got these photos just fine.
    Cute mix you have.
    Any idea of the parents?

  • He also looks very Kelpie-ish

  • Mom was a pure bred Basenji - and dad was a neighborhood Romeo of unknown origin. He's a little larger than a Basenji, but has the overall shape of one - including the Cinnabon tail. He also cleans himself, stares out the window for hours (perched on the back of a chair, of course) and doesn't bark.
He's incredibly independent - that took some getting used to after having had a biddable Golden retriever, but we've done lots of training and, if he wants to, he'll listen! We're his third guardians - the previous two couldn't handle his penchant for escape, and although the first month I thought we had made a grave mistake, I am now totally smitten! I know he's not like the other Basenjis here, but I have fallen in love with the breed and would love to be part of the group.
    Cheers,
    Bewler

I understand, Ha ha, there are times after four years with Jazz and almost two with Keoki, we wonder if we've made a grave mistake :D

I wouldn't give these two up for the world: TOTALLY SMITTEN.

    Of course, it helps a lot that I have Jazz – the MOST BEAUTIFUL Basenji ever born, and Keoki -- the CUTEST Basenji ever born. {never mind what the other people here may tell you. ;) }

  • Cute, he is definitely doing the "basenji lean" on the couch.

  • He's very pretty. It's hard to tell exactly what color he is in the pics - is he black or a really dark brown?

  • Very cute pooch. :)

  • Cute basenji mix you have there!!!:D Thanks for sharing the pics!

  • Wonderful dog!:D

@abonnard Pee pads got me through in the end, she would pee every 20 mins for the first months, then 40 mins, then she suddenly went to being able to hold it for many hours. One of the best purchases I got before she arrived was a small carpet washer, saved my sanity. The cleanup is so key otherwise they go back to the same spot.

@basenjilovers - She is very cute, please make sure that DNA testing was done for Fanconi and PRA. And if not or you are not sure, you can get the test kits at www.ofa.org. You do the test as it is a cheek swab.

A good vet is a good vet even if they aren't "basenji experts"! The good ones will be willing to learn about the breed but at the end of the day, a basenji is still a dog. ANY dog can be quirky!! My vets never saw basenjis before mine and I've had zero issues. They are patient, kind people who care about their patients. (My dogs are show dogs and very easy patients though! used to standing still while someone examines them). A good vet will be willing to listen to you! Ask local friends where they go and get a few recommendations. REMEMBER!!!!!!! It's 100% OK to decide a vet isn't the right fit. There is no shame in shopping around! Don't keep going to a place you don't love. It's up to you to train your new baby to be OK with being handled/examined. Work on playing with paws, opening their mouth, gentle restraint, etc. I also belive that muzzle training is a good idea. If your dog (any breed!!!!) is ever hurt/painful they might try to bite the vet OR you so having them used to a muzzle is a wonderful thing. Make it positive so going to the vet is no big deal! Good Luck with your baby!

Nope, you're not confused. In fact, I just came back to the site because I realized I'd made my mistake! LOL I'd just finished reading the posts on the "lawsuit" thread, so Larka was on my mind when I was browsing the photos. Sorry.. haven't had coffee yet. Nevermind . . . :o
