  • Hello Paula and Bella. Glad you found us. Please tell us more about your Bella (and thanks to the members that told you about this site)

  • Paula, Nice to see you made it here! (This is Carrie)
Just wanted to let everybody know to look out… Bella is the next big thing in lure coursing! She had never even seen a plastic bag in lure coursing context before this weekend. When Paula slipped her for the first time, Bella stood stock still for about 3 seconds. When she realized what was going off, she took off after the bunny with no further hesitation! As the lure turned back towards the start, she began to return to Paula, not fully realizing she was being encouraged to change those wonderful plastic bags. Once Paula made it clear she could continue, she completed a second loop beautifully! She ran again later in the day. I missed it, but heard it was another great run. She's a natural... Look out world!

  • Hello & welcome from Canada.

  • Welcome to the forum! Can't wait to see pics!

  • Welcome Paula! It was so great to meet you and Bella on Sunday! And she did sooooo well at her first time chasing the bunny.

I was supposed to give you some lure coursing links but I am at work presently and have everything bookmarked on my other computer. I will post again later tonight.
You will get the hang of the forum in no time :)
    Don't forget to post pictures!

  • Welcome to the forums and hello from another "Bella's Mom.":D Oh, and I can't wait 'till you get the hang of navigating the forums so we can see pictures of your Bella!

  • Thanks for sharing so much on Sunday…any trips to Lewis Park planned anytime soon? I definitely would like to meet up for playdates. Bella and I are planning to go to Kennesaw Mountain this weekend (weather permitting) and of course we top off each Sat & Sun at the Swift-Cantrell off leash park. Looking forward to the links when time permits...Paula and Bella

  • Hi Paula,

Here are all the links in my coursing bookmarks folder:

Photographer that does most coursing events. Many pictures of Zip and Lola can be found here.

This is Ruthanna Birchfield's site. This is where we got Zip's coursing blankets. She is Todd's wife and is sometimes the Field Trial Secretary for coursing events.

A regional coursing club. They do a lot of events in Calhoun.

    http://www.nghounds.info/

S.O.N.G. site. They have the Sunday practices. If you e-mail the secretary she will get you on the e-mail list, that is how they get the word out about practice dates.

    I think you've already been here….

AKC, to search for AKC coursing events. Go to Events and Awards search on the left and select Lure coursing on the "Competition Type" drop down menu.

If Bella doesn't have AKC registration you can apply for an ILP # for her and she can compete in pretty much any event except conformation. Carrie will be able to tell you more about that.

Actually I'm free on Sunday, so we could have a playdate.

  • You are awesome! I think I gave my cell phone number to Carrie…or maybe it was you. I would definitely like to meet up for playdates...my cell 678-270-0403. Bella and I plan to hit the mountain (weather permitting) on Sat morn and afternoon, as well as Sunday morn and afternoon.

  • Hey Paula,

Posting personal info is a no no. If you e-mail the moderators you can ask them to send us your e-mail address and we can be in touch that way.

  • Clearly I don't know the rules…how do I email the moderator?

  • Yeah it's ok, no worries, really.
    Um….I think they are
    admin@basenjiforums.com

Or "Contact Us" on the bottom right ought to work also.

  • Thanks, I just sent an email to the webmaster to forward my info to you…let's see what happens. Tell Liz, Zip and the ever handsome Riley "Hi! from myself and Bella"

Hey thanks! A Basenji owner's manual is exactly what I've been looking for. The more I learn about these amazing creatures, the more I realize that everything I've ever known about dogs and puppy training is pretty much useless! These guys have rules of their own! I will send for my copy right away. I really appreciate all of the help I've received from everyone here so far. It's already proven extremely helpful. No help like that from those with "on the job" experience! I look forward to sharing my experiences with Missi and Cooper as well. Thanks again! ~Beth

Andrea - I want to thank you for recommending the obedience website. We have all begun a program of dog training - fun for the kids especially. We have her (and the Jack Russell mix) sitting before they are allowed out, and they must "stay!" sitting even when the door opens until they are given a command to "go!" Even if the cat is just outside the door taunting them with his wicked yellow eyes to chase him - they must sit and stay until told to go. And now, after a month of constant training from all of us - they do it. In fact, both now sit at the door before it even opens anticipating the command. We also have hand gestures for the verbal commands - probably not the conventional ones, but they work for us and the pooches. We've started working on "come" now - Kandy definately doesn't like it, but she is beginning to obey "come-sit" for her treats. No treat without obeying. She's smart and quick to learn, and so is Sammy, so we're having a good time with them. Well, we did until Sammy went into heat and began making us all nutty with her constant whining and alternate aggressive behavior (she and Kandy had some real loud and nasty tussles) I had little time for the internet, for all the extra work it caused and the lack of sleep! But she's nearly done with that, and both are returning to whatever poses for normal and are getting along again. We're so happy with the two of them, and Kandy is so unique and special. What a treasure - wierd noises that she makes and all! MamaofMany

They also need to have plenty of available things they are allowed to chew on! They are not a dog that can be allowed to get bored while unattended, not if you value your shoes, pencils, pillows, chair legs. . . . Awesome breed, though! No doubt about it. I'm glad I stumbled into them. I'd always heard about them when I was a kid,but it was just that they were "those African Barkless dogs". That's all I knew. I'm hooked now though. Two years ago Bloodhounds were my favorite dog. Now it's Basenji all the way! There are just no other dogs like them.
