Breeders in TN

Breeder Talk
  • I'm looking into purchasing or rescuing a young or puppy Basenji. Any know any reputable breeders in East or Middle TN. I've been looking all over the rescues and shelters to find one. Just looking for ideas, So I might be able to meet w/ a breeder.

  • Have you checked out www.basenji.org for breeder listings? Or if interested in rescue, try www.basenjirescue.org

Don't think there are any in TN, but certainly in the states near by. Sometimes you will have to travel a bit.

  • Check out Cairo, especially if you don't already have a male dog… Cairo does better with a female canine friend! He is five years old and a tri-color (sounds pretty sweet)! :)

  • Good luck with your search.
Let us know how it goes…

  • Thanks so much for the quick responses, I'll be doing some search in N. GA as my brother doesn't live far from there. I've done my research on basenji's for about a solid year now, but I'm nervous talking to a breeder that I'll forget some obvious questions. Is there certain things you all feels needs to be asked other than the Fanconi Testing on sire's and Dam's, and other health tests? I won't have a chance to visit the breeder more than once before I would have a chance to buy, so I want to try to make the most of conversations wither breeders.

I talked with several breeders pretty extensively by email before and after I met them with the questions I had. It was a while before I visited any of them (the closest was 3 h away). There is a post with a link to a list of standard questions everyone should ask a breeder when they are looking into getting a puppy.

  • Here's the link. http://www.basenji.org/learn/

Go to "screening breeders" at the top.

That is a great list…and great explanations of why those questions are important.

I know Terry Reed is a breeder near Houston and currently has 2 litters. She also shows her basenjis. She was recommended when we looking for a Basenji when ours crossed the Rainbow Bridge last April. We ended up rescuing a mix instead since we didn’t want to wait but had no reservations about getting a puppy from her if we needed.

We were saddened and disappointed in our visit there. It was our first exposure to the Breed unfortunately. We are working with Robyn and a reputable breeder in South Georgia currently. We are hopeful for a match with a young adult Or teen. Thanks for your input.

I'm sorry for your loss. I did not mean to seem overly harsh, but I am glad you found the article eye-opening. I am very sad that you lost your boy so young. Please consider giving a homeless dog a second chance, or buy only from responsible breeders for a pup. it really is worth it. -Nicole

@khanis: Not polished ??? Sorry, but that is one of the silliest things that I have heard in ages. **I'm sorry; to what is this referring? I have seen dogs that are uglier than sin.. in the show ring no less! People that can't breed a decent looking domestic basenji aren't going to be able to breed a decent looking African basenji! **Uglier than sin? Really? I really prefer health and temperament and function as breeding goals. IMHO. How is that for a bunch of African beauties??? **Your dogs are quite lovely. So are my two Jasiri-Sukari B's. But neither would win in a show. We think they're beautiful, too. And they both have sweet temperaments. Lucky us. :) s.
