@eeeefarm - Totally agree with both of you, while I don't do the "restrain the pup", but if it works great and in a pinch it does work for me if really needed. When we have pups (babies) and Mom is tired of them and puts herself in a position that they can't reach her, they turn to the next adult in the house.... same thing will happen if they get over excited and yes, I have seen Basenji Moms, pin the pup to the ground and/or other adults in the home.... so it is something that a pup understands. Walking away works for me... or I try to change up the "game" by turning to working their minds and getting them to think about other things. In the Basenji Breed this is another way of teaching them that the prior behavior is not acceptable. They learn pretty quickly. Thanks for posting this thread eeeefarm... well needed...
Snuggle buddies?
-
In a previous thread someone mentioned that they used a heating pad type thing in the kennel crate. I've found one online that is called a "snuggle buddy" but it is really just a gel disc that heats up. Does anyone know what the name is for the one that has rice in it that you put in the microwave to heat? I remember it can last almost all day and in the event of being chewed on, it's only rice. I can't find the thread that discussed this.

i've had a snuggle safe for years (10+) and my dogs (4 or 5 if you count the long term foster) have never chewed on them.

I think it was a snugglepuppie mentioned in this threard by lvoss. I'm thinking about ordering one for my new one.

If you are looking for an electric one, I would recommend Lectro-Kennel (you can search the web for best prices) I have used this for years for my litters. However, while you can buy a thermostate, just as easy to buy a light dimmer switch and connect… and then you can moderate the heat as you want.

The snugglepuppie comes with both the gel insert (2 of them) and a bag to put rice in (has instructions about what to do). I just got mine in the mail from the site that Lisa posted in that thread…and used the basenji code for a donation for Dr. Jo.

The snugglepuppie website mentions a limited edition basenji snugglepuppie that was sold at nationals this year. Did anyone get one? I'm curious what they look like.

I am not sure they had them at the Nationals, I think they may still be working on the prototype.

I was looking for donations for our fun night for our BCOC specialty in Calgary at the Stampede this year, and Petstages sent me a warming pad that you warm up in the microwave. I don't know how much it costs, but it's like a little collar shaped item. This is what it looks like. Apparently it's filled with buckwheat and it has removeable packets of the buckwheat so it can be washed.

I emailed Snuggleme out of curiosity and they said just that, they weren't able to get them to nationals. Also, she said that most basenji breeders are ordering the black lab puppy. That's interesting….

Not sure if anyone is crafty out there, but these are really easy to make!

We ordered the black labs and the brown and white snuggle puppies since our litter had both colors and my mom wasn't sure if the pups would have a color preference.
