    Been there, done that far too many times to count. Basenjis have a knack for hitting just the right spot behind the knee to send a human flying. I feel your pain and hope you feel better soon. :(

    Yes, my dogs have definitely tried to take me out before…strangely it is always the same ones. Bella knocked me down during my first pregnancy...she ran right into my leg and took it out from under me...for a minute I thought my ankle was broken...but all was fine. Then, as some of you know, I fell down during my last pregnancy trying to save a woodchuck from her and her son, Hippo. All turned out well with that episode as well.

    But for some reason, she and Hippo lack that ability to say 'I am about to run into something'...or maybe they just don't care....beautiful...but not too bright ;)

    Yesterday Larry was entertaining our 3 and 5 y/o grandsons by letting the dogs chase a laser pointer. He rarely does it because the dogs, especially Jayden, go so nuts for it. (Cory eventually tires of chasing it and sits down and watches Jayden go bonkers.) The boys were sitting on the floor and Jayden was so focused on the laser that he ran into the 5 y/o's head with his head. He hit him hard enough to put a little bruise on his cheek bone.
    So much for that game!

    Did the woodchuck survive the experience with Bella and Hippo? Or is it over the bridge running in the fields with Redmund's 2 deer?

    Actually, it DID survive. It is really a crazy story, and one that I will NEVER forget, nor will our twins, since it brought about their arrival into the world! I can't remember if I told the story here…but I will try to summarize...

    I heard a wierd noise outside, dog noise...mom and kid who have never fought...opened the door, and they each had one end of an adolescent woodchuck. So I grabbed both of their collars and started to pull them off of him (I, giant in my eighth month of twin pregnancy). I got them away from the hog, but then fell off our little back porch...onto my stomach! I had to let the dogs go, in order to get back up...and at that point, the woodchuck dashed into our family room, and of course they followed. At this point Querk was just like 'wth? why would I want to mess with that?' So I levered my way up, and went in to find them trying to pull the wc apart again in the family room..of course everyone was screaming..dogs, rodent, me..etc. Finally got them off of him again, and got the dogs into their crates...closed Querk outside...woodchuck is yelling at ME (hello..I saved your butt!) So I just left him in the family room to go call my doctor and Tim....doctor said go to hospital to be monitored, Tim came home..and to make a long story not quite as long, rustled the woodchuck into a dog crate with a broom and snow shovel. Took that crate outside (front yard this time!!), and WC skedaddled away when he opened the door. We had never before, and never since seen a wood chuck in our yard....just strange. The babies were born that night...but may well have been even if I hadn't fallen...I was having contractions prior to the fall. We sometimes call the babies Woody and Chucky ;) Bella had a shallow bite on her cheek...and that was the only blood drawn that day, well, except for the scrapes I had from falling face first on the patio! It could have been so much worse for everyone involved!

    OMG..with the knowledge that you and the babies (and the woodchuck) did fine, that is one of the funniest dog stories I've heard. The mental picture of that whole scenerio is just too funny!

    OMG…what a visual from that story. :D:D:D

    I'm trying to picture how I would react to a woodchuck in the house...knowing how I react to a simple little field mouse. :eek: We have woodchucks that dine on clover on our lawn in the summer. Ruby & Brando go NUTS if they look out the window and see one...so I can only imagine your scenario.

    Good on you for keeping a cool head in the face of all of it! :D

    Funny funny story - after the fact of course.

    Although we do occasionally get woodchucks (same as groundhogs for those of you in the eastern states) and lots of other creatures, I haven't seen one in quite awhile here. However, my first basenji caught a young muskrat/marshrat who was stupidly trying to cut through our yard and treated him just like he did his toys - " few quick snaps and the stuffing started flying".

    In your position, where you really have to take her out a lot, I understand. And I hope her comfort continues. My point was it is situational need, not dog need to be that social. :) I have a slim chance of that having worked with my current 2, but with my incredibly dog aggressive first one, I'd have been out in a basket muzzle and warning everyone to keep their dogs away.

    @tanza: Got ya…. and how nice of her to sit up and puke!!! :eek: I am lucky (knock on wood) all mine ride great... crate pads keep them from sliding around and they just sleep anyway.... Sure makes clean-up easier! I used to keep wipes in the car to clean her, esp. before shows! ew. I just layer plastic bags in the trash can, and tie 'em off as used, then toss when we get to where there's an outside trash can. I'd make video to show, but really, that'd be gross :eek: She's really good in her harness, so it works out quite well. As I said, Keoki continues to be my car challenge in terms of how to best travel with him. But he loves going in the car in general.

    When Cory and Jayden get into something special (in their eyes) that they suspect they aren't supposed to have, they go and hide in a chair so they can examine it and chew it in private. There is no "Let's go show Mom!". Often Cory will rat Jayden out. She will make such a fuss that I've learned to recognize her "tattling" ruckus. If I want to get on the computer, I have to secure them in the room with me or put them outside. If not, Jayden WILL find something for them to get into. He is tall for a basenji and I swear he can use his front paws like hands! Pat

    Yes I agree Pat, Fort Funston could get very crowded and dangerous for smaller dogs as packs of bigger dogs playing could cause injury. My 2 Basenjis were very good and stayed pretty close to me and got used to the crowds. The only problem I had there was with this lady who had an older Tri color female Basenji. It would bite my blk/wht, Nika who was 1-1/2 on the butt. A few times of that and I stayed way away from her. The problem is Nika was a very playful girl and never did anything like that. A few times of getting nipped on the butt started her doing it to other dogs and Basenjis. A Basenji would want to play and Nika would chase and give a nip and the the other dog would get mad and a fight would occur. Nobody would ever get hurt thankfully. It was rare that it would happen as I took them there for 9 years, mostly on the weekend without problem. We had a lot of fun and people loved the Basenjis! Ringo, the red/wht was a very entertaining clown when we'd go down to the beach.
