  • My dog's blood tests came back probably clear and probably carrier. Do I need to continue to do the Diastix testing?

  • @Kebasmom:

My dog's blood tests came back probably clear and probably carrier. Do I need to continue to do the Diastix testing?

So you have one of each? And no, you do not have to continue with the Diastix testing, only if they came back as Affected….

Good for you and your "kids"...... yea!!!!!!!!!!!!! no worries about Fanconi

  • Congrats for the results!!! :)

  • My boy came back with the probably clear reading and my girl came back with the probably carrier reading. Well that's good news that I don't have to be the pee catcher anymore…... :)

  • Again that is great that you don't have to worry about Fanconi and that super

… but only goes to show that it is so important to test.... I (sorry) don't remember where you got your Basenjis... but I am guessing the sire and dam's were not tested... so the Sire and Dam of your girl, one will be a carrier at best and one clear, or both can be carrier, or one could be affected and one carrier. Hopefully you will let the breeder know that they need to test before breeding again... as there is every chance that they could be producing affecteds.
Even your boy could have a carrier parent... and be clear or worse both parents could be carriers and have a clear...

Or you could have bred your girl to a carrier and produced affecteds....

  • Fantastic! Thats great news. happy dance

  • Congratulations on your good news :)

Kathy, I sure didn't mean to indicate it isn't a godsend or fantastic! Of course it is. I just meant… well as the Arabs say, Trust in G-d but tie your camel. Get the testing, use it to help guide breeding, retest if necessary, but keep doing the strip test. It's an easy if annoying process that protects your dog against testing errors or human errors.

@lukris: That's good news about Chance Vicky. At least you know you have to find a nice clear boy for Nakura now. You must be relieved. Chance is Nakura's son so can't use him! The search continues. We need to encourage more people to test are there are only about 6 clear stud dogs in UK at moment. So not much too choose from there!!

No, I meant it takes about a week to get the test and usually 2 to 3 weeks for the results once they are received back at the lab. Please read my post about breeding on the other thread

@etzbseder: Well, I got the results back yesterday, and they say that Medjai is "PROBABLY AFFECTED WITH FANCONI SYNDROME". So, now I get about one more year of little worry before I start strip testing and waiting for the inevitable. Hang in there. It is a tough road ahead. neither you nor your dog will understand the changes that can happen so suddenly… but know that it is not with malicious intent that they pee and pee and pee. There are so many supporting groups and people out there to help you and your B thru this. You can have a good life even with this sentence hanging over you. Best of luck. Enjoy your B as they are today... don't worry about tomorrow. I'll keep you and your Medjai in my thoughts.
