• What is an appropriate weight for a 7 month old female basenji?

Just wondering if I should cut back on the chow…..

    Thanks,

    Karen

  • my GUESS would be around 18-19 lbs, but it would help to see a picture, because if she's almost full height, then she should probably be just a tad heavier, and if she's still small, then I'm guessing 18-19. Do you know how big her parents are?

Rather than worry about a number, look at your dog.
You should be able to see a nice waistline when you look at her from above,
and from the side there should be a nice little tuck up behind the ribs. You should not see the ribs {although sometimes when they're in motion you can}, but you should be able to easily feel the ribs when you run your hand down her side.

If you can't feel those ribs…. you may want to cut back or run her more!

  • I've been wondering the same thing!!! Lola seems very tiny… she's 7 months old & only 13 pounds & I'm kind of afraid she might have stopped growing. She's never had much puppy fat, and she's so active that she is very skinny. I don't think she's underfed; she's just very athletic looking for a puppy & always has been. I've thought about taking her into the vet & asking them if she has a growth problem, but then I was thinking I'm just an overworried mom.

She seems to be a bit on the light side as my puppy who is 5 months weighs in at 16 pounds and is fairly lean. What height is she?

Have you talked to the breeder? What are the sizes of the sire and dam? And many pups are lean at this age…. and I would doubt she has a growth problem... if she is built that way and bred that way... it would be normal

Height? As high as she wants to be… she can climb anything 😉

Seriously... I don't know how tall she is. I can't find anything to measure her with just now. And I guess I should have thought of the obvious... I do know her mom was sort of petite. I never worry about Booger, but she's my princess. I'm sure I'm just overreacting. She's very healthy otherwise & the vet has never said anything about her size (although I don't know how many basenjis he's ever seen).

  • I also worry about Mirtillo's weight. He's 6 months, 7 kilo (16 pounds) and pretty high on his legs. I asked the vet and she said he looks great, she likes them lean when they're young. But a breeder I met, said he's too skinny…

I think it wouldn't hurt him if he'd gain a pound..

I think he looks ok as his ribs are not visible.

I like them to be on the slightly leaner side also.

Here's Keoki when he was 6 mos. He's also a lean boy.

  • When I hear the weights and heights of B's in the other threat… Mirtillo is really thin... He's already 41 cm/16,1 inch!

But Mirtillo is still just a pup, isn't he? A lot of those weights, etc are for adult dogs.

You don't a 6 mos old weighing his full adult weight!

    No, of course not 🙂
But he has still 'some' pounds to go before he weighs his adult weight! 😉

We'll see.. he's happy and active as he is right now!

Okay I finally managed to get decent measurements. She's actually 6 months (because I can't count… not 7) she's around 13-14" (everytime I put a ruler near her she jumped away) & about 15 lbs (I'm weighing myself with her in my arms & then just me by myself & the number changes slightly everytime). So 6 month old female, 13-14" & 15 lbs. Does this sound about right? Somebody posted on one of the weight threads about the growth plates closing around 7-8 months so I'm hoping she grows a bit in the next month or two.

I posted about the growth plates. Chances of her growing an inch more is pretty slim, IMO, maybe 1/2" at most would be my guess…. and for 13-14", 15lbs would be about right, IMO....

Okay, well after all of the worrying, the funniest/strangest thing has happened. We swear she has had an overnight growth spurt! Today she just looks SO MUCH BIGGER than yesterday… and she's gained about 2 pounds since I weighed her 3 days ago. And I finally got Andrew to hold her still while I measured her and she's almost 15" and about 16 pounds now. I'm not as concerned anymore... I was just afraid maybe she was going to be tiny forever (she's ADORABLE but I'm tired of people asking me if she's a min-pin!)

Thanks for all of the opinions. Its just difficult for us to remember Booger at this age. Its not like we kept a log of his growth or anything, and he's a little large (almost 17") so I don't know if a large male is the best to compare a small female's growth against. 🙂

  • 17 is normal for a male…

    From the Basenji standard:

    Size, Proportion, Substance
Ideal height for dogs is 17 inches and bitches 16 inches. Dogs 17 inches and bitches 16 inches from front of chest to point of buttocks. Approximate weight for dogs, 24 pounds and bitches, 22 pounds. Lightly built within this height to weight ratio
