• Well, I have never had a B who didn't like to eat.. till now. So my darling pup  has now been refusing her food - which up until a month in a half ago she adored. I started mixing in some all natural canned food with it - which she enjoyed, but she never managed to have solid stools for over a month - always semi soft, or completely soft… So I weaned her off the wet stuff, and now she has been refusing to touch her normal food.... I'm a little disheartened to part with it - because it's the only bio food I have found here. (perhaps Séko or the euros can help me here)

So do I stick it out?? It's been almost a week of her not eating regularly... 😕

PS. Of course this means the rascal has been finding other eating means and has stooped to new lows of foraging... alas gone are my fav. headphones, a few trash bags demolished - jars appearing from no where with my B's head plunged into them.

  • Maybe you weaned her off the canned stuff too quickly. Maybe try just a spoonful of the canned stuff in with the regular until she finally flips over completely?

  • Adding pumpkin to food can firm up stools.
Raw or canned pumpkin do work wonders on b's guts.

  • hgmmmm. I shall see if we can get some.. I don't know if we eat pumpkin here. but there might be some at the American store in Geneva.. I have her on a complete grain rice right now.. which she downed.

I don't know what kind of bio food you give her and I don't know if these brands are sold in Switzerland.. But: Yarrah, Biofood, Arden Grange (not sure if it's bio), Bandit (raw meat)

  • I won't be of any help as it is really difficult to get good quality kibbles in France, bio food is like nowhere to be found or I don't find the products to be that good an appetent for my dog. 😞

  • Séko are your pets on a raw diet then? I was thinking I would have to start cooking for her… but the time the time! I'll look up your suggestions Janneke - we'll see what Switzerland has... perhaps a trip to Zürich is in order, more options there.

  • I am looking into raw diet, but not easy to find some retailers making you good prices at least in my area, I just got on the raw feeding forum to get help!

  • Can you get sweet potatoes? I use that instead of pumpkin with EL D (although more to help with anal gland issues than the fecal issue).

  • ohhh
i remember sweet potatoes.. nooo can't get them - or at least I haven't seen them in the years i have lived here..

  • I have concerns re "raw" diets.
I know some folks have dogs who do very well on this.
My issue is that I don't have the time to fix it and I am always afraid I
won't put in everything the dogs bodies need.
Sort of like living on a "special" diet…might work well for a while, but what are the long term effects.
Course, with all the junk that is put in processed foods, human and animals, who knows what we are really eating...

  • and I say vive la suisse - where gmos etc are forbidden. 😉 long time veggie here. 🙂 I started feeding her what I'm eating for now, lots of veggies, whole grains and fruits - until I find something better

Grains are not really good for dogs, nor are they needed or digested very well. Really they need meat… I know lots of people that are not meat eaters.. but even those will feed raw meat to their fur kids.

  • Oh she is eating meat too, - she just throughly enjoys whole grain bread, and rice..

My Anuby eats everything: rice, soup, fish, tinned sardines, meat (I cook it first), croquettes for dogs and I have to hide my cats'croquettes! I never give her raw meat, perhaps I am wrong, it is just a habit or tradition in my family, it may sound stupid but we always said that it would give them a taste for blood and make them more aggressive!!!
Should I give her raw meat???

Giving them raw meat does not make the more aggressive… but it is not necessary to give them raw meat, just that there are those of us who feed a raw diet that included raw meat.

  • Apache has always been indifferent to food, I never had a dog like it. I catered to him..even though his breeder told me not to..because he was SO skinny. I would give him raw meat when he wouldn't eat anything else but most days he got kibble, canned and home cooked meat and veggies mixed togeather…sometimes he'd eat it, sometimes he wouldn't. Finally at around 2 he starting eating more and now he's eating everything in his bowl.

  • Is you boy still skinny?
I hear there is a receipt for Satin balls that will put weight on a b.
I have not had to use it, my b's are a bit round…but folks who have swear by it.

  • He's finally put on weight and kept it on. I did try the satin balls when he wasn't eating…he wouldn't eat them either! I have never met a dog that won't eat more then he will...until now.

That is so "normal" for boy Basenjis… my boy, OJ, who was very ill as a puppy had a terrible time with eating until he was about 3... then he started eating like a horse, unless the girls were in season.. once we had him neutered at 4 all that stopped also....

But I would not cater to him... he was fed like the others.. he either ate or he didn't... his choice...

Now however that he is closing in on 17 (September 9th)... I do cater to him... ggg... but different with elders then young pups/young dogs...

I will never cater to young healthly dogs.. they will eat when they are hungry... they will not stare themselve... even if you think they look like they might...
